love the guy with the mohawk, great sketchbook:thumbsup:
Helzer's Sketches
Uhm, you are sto dynamic. I’m not able to understand your ‘thoughts-flow’ behind your pictures. Please, be more explicit for a little dummy
Creepy cool Ideas!!!
The Fisherman Is awesome too.
Sometimes it’s good to take a break and clear your head. Feels fresh again the next time around.
Your DOF approach to your painting is steadily improving the feel of it…its like Frazetta meets Giger…
Love your work…as always
jpedro - Thanks, I appreciate it
CyborgJA - Wow, that’s a hard question. I hate to take the easy way out, but really I just paint what I see and feel. I wish I could elaborate, but I don’t think I can…I guess, that makes me a big dummy
Thanks, Serena:)
remcv8 - yeah, I just felt vacant so I stopped for a little while. Thanks for the great comments
Nazirull - Thanks a bunch. By the way, what is DOF stand for?
I’ve been reading “A Princess of Mars” by Egar Rice Burroughs this past week. A very cool novel. One of the main characters are these green war mongering four-armed creatures called “Tharks”. Anyhow, I did a 90mins sketch of my interpretation of the alien. I plan to detail it out this weekend: finish the arms, perhaps add a sword and some jewerly, and basically polish it some more.

I’ve understood
!
Mmmm can’t wait to see it finished. The description of its muzzle is really intense and well done ![]()
Oh pardon me…DOF is depth of field, like most of ur pieces, u have the main subject in sharp focus and the background blurring…like a macro lens effect.
jpedro - Thanks !
Nazirull - Oh…depth of field…I should have figured that one out. Thanks. Nazirull.
CyborgJA - Thanks, Serena. I intended to work on the “Thark” this weekend, but I got sidetracked (below).
Thanks again, everyone
90 mins.

Each new pic is a surprise ! This time you used an icredible color palette. I love it.
mmm…don’t you think that the man is too big ? I loose his head with the top border
Serena.
Thanks a bunch, Serena
Yeah, I could shrink him done a bit. Although, I was actually inspired by some archectecture from the old series. Specifically where look Luke is dueling with Vader in the underbelly of the city. If I remember correctly, there were hi-tech tunnels in which one had to stoop inside at the entrance to fit.
However, solely on composition, you’re right. I should reduce him down a bit and open some space between his head and the tunnel border.
Thanks, again
Yes yes yes, now I’ve understood the reference !
Well don’t loose time on this one …create another new pic
Thanks as always, Serena. I’ve neglected my thread as of late, just been busy at work and life stuff.
Here’s a 50 minute piece

It’s really difficult to comment in this thread because I’d rather spend that time ogling at these amazing sketches a little more.
But, I will try
The Thark is amazing. I love the “beak” and the slightly droopy eye there, but what really made an impression was the really cool lower arm to torso attachment. I’ve been trying to make multiarmed beings (very badly) and you have executed this so well! applause I like the 2 rows of teeth too
I can so imagine this guy aggressively making his way through a busy market , flinging all the poor things that come in his way to the sides. heh
The purple and gold one is beautiful. Lovely colours there. The latest one with the strong silhouettes is very interesting too. I think I spot something new in all your sketches, it’s great!
Speechles about this sketchbook. Awesome stuff in here. Very inspirational to me. Love how you deal with colors and textures. Pleasure to watch
Iridyse - Yeah, I agree it’s difficult to do four-armed creatures. It’s just one of those anatomical things that never quite looks right. I’m not totally happy with my results, but I don’t wish to spend any longer on this guy. Thanks so much for your comments and kind words…I’m glad you enjoy browsing through the thread!
enialadam - Thanks
Color is always my favorite part of painting.
Nazirull - Yeah, Frazetta is the master. I dig his interpretation of a “Thark”. It has more of a martian quality with a domed head and buggy eyes. I wanted to try something different…a little more fierce, scary and warrior-like. Thanks ![]()
razz - Thanks for stopping by and posting such a nice compliment
Thanks again, everyone.
I’ve in invested about 4 and half hours into this guy. I may go back to it sometime later since there are many things I’d like to fix. As of now, though, I’m burnt-out on him.

I really enjoy watching your pieces, you have a very unique style; Great textures and choice of colors. The designs themselves are second to none.
George - Part of my goal with this thread is to do enough sketches to help evolve my style. So saying my style is “unique” is a great compliment. Many thanks ![]()
Actually, I resumed work on the Thark today. Another couple of hours worth.
