bishtmahesh, an Action is a recorded sequence of events in Photoshop. Basically, if there was a series of things you wanted to do to an image that you also wanted to apply to other images, you can hit a “Record” button in the Actions Palette, and Photoshop will record what you do. Going to another image (or layer) and hitting the “Play” button will play back those events.
When doing this, Photoshop will record [i]most [/i]of what you do, but there are a few limitations that make sense if you think about them, usually having to do with the names of layers or files, etc. If two images don't have the same names in their layers, but the names of layer are important to the Action, there may be a problem. If one Action requires that a selection is made before applying, then it will give you unexpected results if you try to play it back without a selection. These are just a few examples.
Open up the Actions palette ([i]Window[/i] menu>[i]Actions[/i]) and you can see that Photoshop comes with some pre-recorded Actions. They can be organized in different folders. Highlighting an Action and pressing the "Play" button (triangle) on the bottom of the palette will begin the Action.
Actions can also be used for batch processing and creating desktop macros, but 99% of the time they are just recorded and played back from within the Actions palette.
And one tip, when you are creating Actions, don’t forget to hit the “Stop” button when you are done, otherwise you will realize an hour later that you’ve been recording everything you do!

i haven’t had to use actions very often in PS but the few times I did it made life SOOOOOO much easier. It is defintily worth learning about actions because at some point you may need to resize 500 images or something and to be able to run a batch process on all of them is awesome.
