Help with extrusion problems please?

#1

Hello, I’m really new to 3D modelling but I’m trying to learn Maya. Im using digital tutors and currently modeling an Audi R8. All is going OK, but now I’m trying to add thickness to a particular section (1) and the extrusion results are nothing like I’d expect, or like the tutorial I’m following.

When I extrude using the local axis, it appears to extrude in two directions, and leads to polys crossing over etc - not pretty! (2)

When I extrude using the world axis it just seems to duplicate the faces and pull away, rather than creating thickness. (3)

The tutor uses the local, in the z axis, and this just adds thickness behind. This is the result I can’t seem to achieve  (4)

I know “Keep Faces Together” has thrown me off before, but I definitely have that on… That’s the extent of my troubleshooting and now I’m stumped. Please can anyone solve my problem?

(I can’t seem to get images to upload - new member thing maybe? Numbers in brackets corresponds to image uploaded in album on imgur)

Thank you for your time in advance!

The normals on some of those faces might be flipped.

Select that geo and display > polygons > face normals. If there are any normals facing the opposite direction than most of the others, select those faces and do normals > reverse (this might be a different menu in maya 2016+)
