Help with comic strip

I am drawing a few sample comic strips for my college paper. I have them drawn out and scanned onto my computer so I can photoshop them but the way I am doing it is very long and tedious. The main problem lies in the photoshop part. When I scan the pictures they show up with every pixel in the white area being a different shade of off-white. Is there any settings on scanners to just pick up black and white? Also, how do you get a greyscale on Photoshop? I am only using printer paper and a uni-ball signo pen. I don’t have any art markers or anything like that. I appreciate your help.

In photoshop, go to the “Image” menu, then click on “Adjustments”, and within that, click on “Levels”. Click and drag the thingie that I highlighted below. The further you drag it to the left, the more of the ‘almost white’ pixels will turn pure white. The black thingie on the left end will do the same thing for the ‘almost black’ pixels.
