Help with adding textures to a finished character model

I am new to 3D modelling, and I made a character from scratch using 3DS Max. I made a lot of research and I found out the best way of adding textures to it is using UVW mapping.

The problem is that when I try to generate the file for editing in photoshop, I have a lot of different segments, one for every polygon. What I want to do is to group these polygons in groups and just making one image and using it in said groups, like this example:

As you can see, there is only one texture for all the polygons in the face of the character.

Can anyone point me to some articles or tutorials on how to do this? I already looked for one but I can’t find any that does what I want to do.
