Help Rigging Arm for my Drone Model [HLP]

#1

Hello Guys,

So I’m working on a short film and I’ve been modelling the UFO type object and now am looking for some assistance rigging the ‘Arm/tenticle’ for him. The model is going to be used in my short film and is quite important and without rigging it just wont work so I am seeking either help on rigging it or looking for somebody with extensive rigging knowledge to possibly help out with the project who can rig it for me which would be a great help.

As this is my first short film I cannot offer any payment but would give credit in the film.

Here’s some images to help illustrate what I need.

So basically, the arm is a flexible mechanical arm (similar to that in war of the worlds) that waves around like a worm in an organic fashion but the scanner at the end needs to be able to move independently so I can animate it as I wish.

The Scanner needs to be attatched at the end and also fixed to the body of the object so just the arm moves.

I have absolutley no knowledge of rigging but this is crucial for my films success and I didn’t know where else to go apart from CGSociety.

I’d be so appreciative of any help and hope I will stay in contact with whoever can help me out as I’m always looking to become friends with like minded people into CG.

Thanks

Luke

Howdy,

Have you thought of piggybacking a spline IK on top of a regular 2 bone limb iK?

Hey,

Thank you for replying, but I have no idea what you mean.

Howdy,

Well, what I described is what is typically use to rig a bendy arm:

You could add more controllers to the spline IK to give it more possible bends.

Thank you but I could really use someone to rig this for me, could you possibly help?

Howdy,

Well, I use Cinema 4D and my CD Character rigging plugins, so that wouldn’t help you in 3DS Max.

But, I’m sure there are some example rigs with bendy arms done in 3DS Max floating around that you could download to see how it’s set up.

This would be a good place to start - there’s even a script available on his site to build the bendy setup for you - http://joleanes.com/tutorials/bendyLimbs/bendy.php
