[HELP] - PTex rendering gray in VRay

#1

Im not sure if this is an issue on the Mudbox side or Maya/vray side. Here’s the workflow:

Exported mesh from maya 2013 as obj with no UVs
Converted and painted PTex paint layer in Mudbox 2014
exported as 8 bit ptex
applied vray_Ptex shader
Default vray render settings

the ptex renders fine but with no color. Manually changing the RGB channel values in the ptex shader has an effect but i have no idea which values are correct.

Am I missing a step somewhere?

you say ptex is rendering fine…?
whats the problem now…?
is only the displacement map working…?

#3

Theres no displacment map at the moment. Its just a simple teapot with some scribbles on it to get a feel for how it all works. The problem is there is no color, its as if its only rendering the luminance.

#4

Below is a side by side of the vray render on the left and the mudbox viewport on the right:

As you can see only the luminance information is shown, no rgb.

#5

try to set the alpha channel to 3 in the vray ptex node…

#6

changing alpha channel doesnt seem to have an effect either :shrug:

#7

you should ask on the chaosgroup forum…
i have no idea whats wrong…

I hate to dig up an old thread but I wanted to post the answer to my original problem.

This video solved it for me

All you have to do is manually set the color channels on the ptex node to:

Red = 0
Green = 1
Blue = 2

The colors on the ptex file should then render as they should.
