Help on Global illumination

:deal: this might sound a bit silly to all you pros, but help 'cus i am new to lighting. Can anyone really give me a lecture on what global illumination is supposed to be and how to achieve it using mental ray ?? please cover the photon theory too if its not too much to ask.
