Help! nHair "pops" in turntable render

I have some nHair in Maya 2013 that is “popping” as it spins an a turntable, as if the hair count is changing each frame.

I can see the PFXhair exhibiting this same behavior when I scrub back and forth in time line, which would indicate that this is not a dynamics issue (since this always needs a runup from frame 1), but instead has something to do with paint effects. If I convert the PFX hair to curves, the popping stops.

Any help is appreciated.

Still trying to figure this out. It looks like the hair is actually moving somehow (independent of the turntable, like little Medusa snakes) which is quite odd since there are no dynamics on it. One thing I found that helped was switching the sub clump method to clump UV. This was causing the hair to shift globally.
