Help Needed Smoothing Part of a 3D Poly

#1

Hi All,

I’m new to this forum and fairly new to 3DS max. I use 3DS max 2013 and have been going through the 3DS max bible book for the past couple on months.

I’m working on my first practice model at the moment (my table tennis bat!), but have come unstuck when trying to smooth the edges of the bat.

I can’t work out how to only smooth the edge of the bat without distorting the rest of the model.

Any help would be appreciated and a step by step description would be amazing.

Thanks

Current state of the model

You could use either Smoothing Groups for the side or use a Turbosmooth modifier. Prioo to the Turbosmooth modifier you’ll need to add extra edges.

A little explanation of why and how can be found here

Hi thanks for replying.

I’ve tried using Turbosmooth but it just collapses the top edge to the bottom edge, it also smooths out areas that I don’t want to smooth. I’ll read the article to see if that helps with it.

How do the smoothing groups work? Just a quick explanation of the process would be very helpful here.

Thanks, that seems to explain it quite well. I shall try it later.
