Help needed: Exploding/shaterring objects

Hello everyone,

First of all I am pretty clueless about anything in Maya that does not involve character animation and modeling so I am sorry if my questions are stupid.

I am planning a short animation which will involve one or two exploding fighter planes and was wondering what method for creating shattering/exploding objects will be the best to use and how heavy will it make the animation in terms of rendering time and all? (if that makes sense) And is Maya even a good choice for that?

I am most likely going to have someone who knows their job do that but I want to have ready suggestions and at least basic knowledge about it when I pitch the idea.
