HELP - IP Address changes, breaks license :-(

#1

Hi,

It seems that I have a problem.

I am on a machine running Vista 64 business.

When I first installed Softimage 2010 and ran the lmtools applet it reported my machines IP address as:

192.168.1.103

Today I go to start up Softimage, it will not run. I check and guess what? My machines IP address seems to have changed all by itself with no help from me – WTF?

It is now reporting my IP address as:

192.168.1.102

Close, but no cigar and obviously this is causing my license to break and keeping me from being able to launch Softimage 2010 any longer.

So, what do I do about this? First, I don’t understand why my IP address decided to change on its own. I also don’t know what I should do about it or what I can do to keep this from happening again.

Any ideas?

This is so annoying…

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

192.168 is private ip, that means its assigned by apc/router dynamically
if you have more than 1 comp in network your ip can change unless its fixed in router by MAC address

can lmtools use ‘localhost’ instead of ip ?

Are you using an wireless adapter of some kind? The joys of the new license manager continue!

AFAIK, the fastest way to get back in the game is to re-register via the AD website and use the new license file, however you’re limited to being able to do this twice (I think) before you have to contact them directly.

I really wish there was a different way to license for those of us only ever using one or two machines that simplified things. Like maybe a dongle…or how about using a processor ID or something instead?

I’m sure Mr. Blair will come to the rescue again as he IS SI support for all I care. Hope he gets a raise or something out of this, though he does get job security!

Hi,

Tell me about it… I’m so fed up with this crap… but I digress.

Well, yes, this machine has 2 standard LAN ports and a wireless card as well. Nothing is currently connected to either LAN port and I connect to the internet via the wireless adapter.

I’m not sure that going back and doing a license regen is the best solution because it seems that this has happened before. I think a year ago during 7.x this machine was using:

192.168.1.102

Then switched itself to:

192.168.1.103

and has now gone back again to:

192.168.1.102

So… it seems that my machine makes up its own mind about what IP it likes to use on a regular basis. With that in mind I’m left thinking that the best solution is to get it to use the 192.168.1.103 address somehow and keep it there.

I admit that when it comes to networking matters I know next to nothing, it’s not my field of expertise, so it’s all kinda voodoo to me

I just want to get it sorted so that this does not become a recurring theme because I’m really getting very fed up with this. The downtime that I’ve had with these licensing issues is becoming a serious matter.

So fingers crossed, I hope someone can rescue me

Cheers,

Joe

Do you have Subscription? Subscription includes technical support.

Unless you have IPv6 enabled (eg on Vista) you can use your hostname instead of the IP address.

If you are on Vista and have IPv6, then you can install this update:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=10976858&linkID=12544121

Then you can use the hostname to point to the license server.

Hi,

Yes, I am on subscription.

Yes, I am on Vista – I will try the update.

Thanks.

No need to re-register or anything like that. As long as your MAC address is unchanged then you’re ok. Go into Softimage user tools and edit setenv.bat. You’ll see a line pointing to your license host id - change that to the new one.

Beyond that, you’d do well to assign a fixed IP to your license server. You can probebly do that through your router setings.

Update:

The update that you suggested seems to have solved the problem.

Thanks for your help as always.

Hopefully I will not have to ask again

Shouldn’t these files install by default if you’re running Vista? There could at least be a check box or something during install…

Is anyone running Windows 7, and does lmtools need to be patched with that OS?

At any rate, thank you Stephen- this morning I woke up…had the same issue as Joe, and just followed the link and instructions- now everything is working well and independent (AFAIK) of my IP. Thank you!

:argh: - that was me during the week, as I was getting the error and yet more problems with the license. Said f&*^ it, I’ll try again. Thankfully I found this thread coz I was wondering if technical support work on a Sunday.
Had a slight glitch I didn’t restart Lmtools as administrator, but all is well now, but is there any more IPv6 glitches out there, I should know about?

#11

No, there are no other IPv6-related glitches.
