Help- Creating Realism of Fabric In Mental ray

#1

Hi I’m wanting to create realistic fabric In maya (using mental ray) such as
•chiffon
•silk
•satin
•viscose
•wool
•cotton
I’m not really sure as to how I should go about creating these different materials I have looked into doing a shader network but I’m fairly new at shader networks so it confuses me a little. I can Also use zbrush and mudbox but then again I don’t know how to create that render realistic material.

Thanks fo your help Jess

Sure, you can do all of these with the mia_material_x. A lot of it comes down to reflections and your texture maps. You may need or want to take some hi-res photos of your own, of the materials you’re wanting to work with. Having good photo-references will help not just for texturing, but when you’re test-rendering they can be a goal or target for you to achieve, too.

Also, you could start by downloading some relevant shaders from HERE and go through the shader tree to see exactly what’s going on. Then play around with the settings and experiment in a test scene to see what is occuring.

reflection/glossiness/roughness and their associated maps are VERY important. And of course your lighting setup will heavily influence the result.
