Help Creating a Painted effect

#1

Hey guys,

Im not a photoshop guru by any means. I can generally do what I need to in it and get out (much more at home coding) but I have started modelling lately and as such, I would like to also be able to skin my models to look like they belong in the game I am working on. The game uses kind of a hand painted look (I believe they said somewhere they do actually hand paint the textures) which I dont have a tablet or anything, so thats kind of out. I would like to know if theres anyway I can get somewhat similar results though?

Heres a couple screenshots of models from the game to give examples.

I have not been able to find any tutorials even anywhere close to this style of work, so I am kind of SOL in that department. So I am looking for any help you guys can give me, and keep in mind im not a photoshop pro, just looking to try and get a style going, and get some practice with it.

hi brett

the texture examples you've posted are indeed hand painted
but there are of course other ways

here's one way:

1. you can easily create the base textures (colors and values) by selecting and filling ares and/or using the rectangle tool, ellipse tool, polygon tool, shape tool, line tool and the mighty pen tool
  1. you can then add additional “3D” effects, shadows etc. by using the different layer effects

    1. for realistic feeling drop in some real textures (photos) over the created texture. here you use different layer modes to blend the photo with your created texture

another way is to use photos and make them look painted (you still need to make the shapes you want). there are several way to do that.

    1. by using different photoshop filters. there are many nice filters which can make a photo look painted in seconds

    2. by using the art history brush tool. this is an awesome tool for this kind of work

    3. using Illustrator or other tools to vectorize texture photos

there are many ways to bypass the tablet-painting solution when it comes to textures but you should remember two things; everything is easier with a tablet (even a small one) and whichever method you’ll choose for your workflow, you won’t get away without learning

i’m very tired but i hope it make sense. cheerio
