You sound like you’re more of a 2d matte kinda guy. I’m more of a 3d person, but either way, its important to know how to draw. There are some pretty amazing tutorials both on the sticky thread of tutorials, and on some of the artist’s website (such as Steven Stalhberg).
Just draw alot, really. Draw everywhere you go, wherever you go. Bring a scratch book with you to jot down thoughts and images. Post your pictures on the 2d forum for advice and comments, I’m sure everyone would be happy to help.
I think knowing photoshop or whatever tool you choose is vital to the later stages, where you scan the picture in and edit it on the computer. The actual nitty-gritty techincal part, I can’t help you with, but I think you’ll find some tutorials even right here on this site if you searched.
