Head and Body UV's

#1

I am in the process of beginning to paint my textures for a character. I usually will texture all body parts including the face on one uv map. Here is the issue, I want the face to have extreme amounts of detail.

My question is… Should I just make one very large texture file (4-6k) or should i create two separate texture files? One normal texure file with just the face, and one normal texture file with the other body parts.

two or more maps are fine…
do a search for uv tiles…
mudbox, mari and 3dcaot in the last version are able to read them native…

Here’s a tutorial that may help:

http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/multiple_uv_tiles/multiple_uvs_tiles.htm

It deals with 3dsmax, but the theory will work with pretty much any 3d app or paint app.

I am using three different textures/uv tiles for one object. The UVs are arranged from 0-1, -1,0, and -1,1. I created file nodes, offset the UVs, and connected to a layered texture. I then assigned my object to the layered shader. Everything looks perfect in the Maya workspace, but I can only render one of the three textures on my object with mental ray. The other textures render straight black. Is this a bug? How can I fix it?

NOTES
I am using Targe files.
Each texture is 4k
I have set the default color to black for the layered texture
