HCR MINI-Challenge #42: Goodbye Ghilbi - Princess Mononoke - Ashitaka and yakul

#1

I’ve always loved Ghibli studios, My neighbour Totoro will always be my favorite. It was hard to decide what to do, but I finally settled for Ashitaka and Yakul from Princess Mononoke.

Thought I’d post how Yakul looks so far , lots of more work left on him though, I’ve only spent about two hours on it so far. I might start with Ashitaka before continuing with muscle and detail on the Elk.

#3

looks great so far… I really like the way head looks

#4

Thank you strychnine!
Todays update, I continued to work on Yakul, now I have lots of detailing to do, mostly fur. Also feel free to give feedback and critique at any point that is how I learn!

#5

the front view looks off to me - I think his body should be bit wider.

#6

Yeah I think you’re right, I shall find some better reference to get those proportions right.

#7

I took a brake from Yakul and started with Ashitaka. I’ve just started blocking him out and still needs a lot of adjusting before beginning detailing, but I wanted to give an update what I have so far. Think there is something about the face that looks weird but not quite sure what…

#8

I think the bridge/root of the nose is too high. There is something wrong with the mouth area, but I can’t pinpoint what - on second full-character picture and second face close-up it looks like mouth is protruding bit too much, but then again profile looks reasonable. You could give more flesh to the chin. But overall looks like great start

#9

Yes nose ridge has gone down now! Also I pushed in the mouth and fixed the chin.
I’ll probably change the face some more though. Mostly worked on the clothes yesterday. Not happy about the hakama so I’m going to redo them.

Then Today I worked some more on Yakul, fixing some proportion stuff, fur, testing some lighting in Maya and tried out a little pose.

#10

I would say we are on to a winner!

#11

I think you need to rework your Folds on the character. Except that, love your ride

#12

Boone: it’s still a month left and lots of lovely projects here, really looking forward to seeing them all finished

Scote: Thank you. You are definately right it the foulds needs to be redone. I have not really got the hang of sculpting fabric yet so this is a good project to practise doing it I guess

I always find it easier to start with some folds and then using sculpting to emphasize them. You may try looking at cloth sym then taking the result into zbrush. Great work on the Elk
Cheers

  • The trick to radial folds is to locate the anchor points for the body (elbow, knee, shoulder etc.), the points where the body will impede the cloths movement, and radiate out from that point. Tough to visualize in 2D but 3D makes it such an easier task.
  • Next you have compression folds where gravity is pulling the cloth down such as Ashitaka’s hood. You are still going to have an anchor point, in this case the top of the hood, but the cloth will be looser and settle into its position.
  • There are more types but last one for now are crumple folds. Leather and thick cloth that tends to hold its shape but is folded by wear and tear. These may not derive from an anchor point but they can, mostly they just settle into position over time where a joint has continuously folded and unfolded. I was thinking Ashitaka’s boots but they look like they may just be bound up cloth.

Most of this information is from Burne Hogarth’s “Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery”. Great intro into the topic and it translates well into 3D.

Now all of that is important but the main thing you should see is folds are based on something: movement, gravity, age. Sculpting them when your character is in default position is probably not a good idea unless its something solid like seams. Pose Ashitaka and then start adding in folds based on his position. You’ll find it easier to not only see where they go but to also get reference based on that pose. Good luck.

Edit:
Check out Selwy’s tutorial on ZBrush clothes. Old but it should be helpful.

Thank you tuckerhcool and WyattHarris That was really great advice and I have even got the book you mentioned just never had time to study it yet, I shall deffinately give that a go.
I’m sorry I haven’t responded until now or posted anything new but I have been really busy and also gotten a job so unfortunately this project will have to be finished another time.
