Kiki research taken from the book “The Art of Kiki Delivery Service”. I will be doing the version where she is seated wearing her pajamas.

Worked on this weekend on Jiji. Quick renders inside Zbrush. Still exploring the possibility of some random sculpted fur.

I’ve been really busy these last couple of days at work so I had to stop for a while on the project. Time to get back to it. I decided to change directions with it and do the classic image of Kiki instead of just her alone. Here is the reference image. Whether the seagulls will be included or not, I’m still thinking about it.

Here are her assets that I’ve been cranking up last week, whenever I had a free time after I got back home from work.

Visual study of Kiki’s character. I’m not aiming for realistic fabric texture and skin shader. Simple and minimal textures. Most of it I’m using architectural shaders for it, even for her skin. My intention is to make it feel as if she were a painted figure.

Kept posing the character today. Still need to include Jiji, her shoes and fine tune it.

More vizdev study. I was going for a painted eye but decided to change for a traditional approach of a cgi eye, with the eyeball, iris, cornea as separate meshes. Also, did some skin tone variations.

Ok I got some messages about the challenge and about the future…

The scene is pretty much done but since the deadline was extended, decided to include seagulls for the final comp.

Basic Dynamesh sculpt to assist with the retopology process.
Retopologized the Seagull sculpt between the middle of the day yesterday and a couple of hours today. Next step, UVs and texture paint.

Clay render version of the scene. Orthos, beauty and wireframes renders coming soon.

Looks excellent!
I love how you’ve captured Kiki and Jiji’s expressions.
My only complaint about the last clay render is that
Kiki’s hair looks like its floating above her skull.
I look forward to seeing this finished!
I’d love to see both of them animated!
