HCR MINI-Challenge #42: Goodbye Ghibli - Spirited Away's Bath House

#1

Hello There,

Since I have some spare time at the moment, and I am also a big fan of Ghibli’s movies. I’d be glad to join in.

I am really into the environments from Spirited Away, and especially the bath house. So I am gonna give it a shot.

I’ll post a wip as soon as I can

Cheers !

Here’s my inspiration board:

My beauty view is most likely gonna be the first pic on the left.

Hey guys,

Some unexpected big chunk of work fall off lately.
So, that’s not much, but I still want to share with you a WIP of the Bath House:

Hopefully I’ll get some extra spare time this week to put more work on it.

Cheers !

Eddy

Mucho detail, very nice.
That place is so complicated its tough to keep it straight. So far so good.

#7

That’s coming along really well. Looking forward to seeing more!

#8

Thanks guys !

It’s mostly repeating and instancing parts from now on.

I should be able to post a new WIP soon.

Cheers !

Eddy

Hey there,

Here’s a quick update on the bath house.

I am blocking out the main volumes on the face fronting the camera. (which is actually the back of the building).

I am mainly looking for the right placement/proportions from now on.
Just added a bit of details here and there to get the right feeling.

Cheers !

Eddy

The detail is amazing. Good work!

#11

Thanks Boone ! Appreciate.

Well, I’d like to share with you my progress so far.

The whole thing is shaping up (and killing me) slowly. I have spend quite some time, putting pipes and industrial stuff, here and there. Also started to put some overall details.

Next steps are gonna be a huge lifting on the side face, stairs, top balcony, and all…

Also, I got a huge freelance project coming this week. I don’t know when I will be able to make an update. I’ll let you know !

I hope you like the piece so far.

Cheers guys !

Eddy

Eddy, if this gets any more detail its going be bloody awesome to look at!

Good luck on the upcoming job!

#13

Thanks Boone, I am glad you like it.

Hey guys,

I’ve found some time this week end to push the bath house a bit further. This is getting a bit more serious.

So, I have done a major improvement on the side face, changed the composition to a more dynamic one, added some overall details like cheminees, stairs and such…

I still have to do some small tweakings here and there. Also, the stairs on the right, and maybe give the main block a more rocky/stoney look, will see about that…

Then, I think I am gonna call it done, and move to the foreground. I got some surprise for you, you’ll see…

Hope you like the piece so far.

Cheers !

Eddy

Amazing stuff! You got a good eye for details and really look forward seeing what suprise you have in store

Keep it up!

#16

Thanks Zstudios !

#17

Your work is very impressive and the detail in all of those parts  the truth is I’ve never done something that big so I thought how you texturing all of those parts.

#18

Thank you very much setocg.

Actually it is kinda new to me as well. This is by far the most detailed model i’ve been working on until now.
I am not thinking too much about the UVZ and textures from now on, simply because it is a modeling challenge. But I still have a hint, on what I am gonna do…

The thing is, there’s not gonna be so many different shaders, and I will mostly use procedural maps to simplify the UV part.
For some interesting parts, and the foreground, I might do classic unwraps and paint some cool stuff to make it look non generic.

This is pretty much what I did on one of my latest picture here:
http://thegreyguy.cgsociety.org/art/3d-3ds-environment-max-design-photoshop-tekkon-kinkreet-rendering-fanart-fan-art-2d-1226404

Most of it is dirt maps and very simple UV mapping, only stuff like signs, the plate on the foreground, and such, are unwrapped, and hand painted.

Cheers !

Eddy

Hey Guys.

Here’s a new version of the bath house. I think I am close to call it done.
I am ok with the details, I guess I am just gonna tweak and correct some stuff all around.

Remarks, critics and all… are welcome.

Cheers !
