Hello everyone! I’m new here
For this challenge I’ve decided to model Setsuko and Seita (and possibly fireflies
) from Grave of the Fireflies/Hotaru no Haka. I’m thinking of going for semi-realism. I hope I’ll manage to finish it despite being a newb.
Here are some references (I will probably use pose from the first picture):

HCR MINI-Challenge #42: Goodbye Ghibli: Hotaru no Haka
Here is what I achieved yesterday with commentary:
I sculpted face - I kinda like it (though it needs some more work, but I decided I want to have everything blocked out first instead of spending indefinite amount of time on details), but it doesn’t feel enough setsuko-ish for me… on the other hand I don’t want make her too chubby for a child who is in fact starving.
This is first time I’ve tried to use fiber mesh (normally I sculpt hair) and I didn’t achieve any good results, so I need to redo hair. Brows are sclupted, but I’ve made them only to have better “feel” of the face.

I made basic shapes of clothes in md, but they miss many details for the time being. The hoodie thing is giving me real trouble - she looks like Red (blue? xD) Riding Hood.

I’m concerned about her height too… I wonder if I made her too tall for 4-year old japanese girl :surprised
This is amazing, I’m really looking forward to seeing this finished
Fabric is something I’m usually struggling with but you seem to have nailed it. have you got any tips to create realistic wrinkles in fabric?
Thank you very much
As for fabrics… I don’t think I’m adequate person to give advices regarding sculpting clothing, 'cause I’ve just started seriously teaching myself 3d sculpting. My workflow of making clothes is one of these:
- sculpt and cry a lot
- use Marvelous Designer and cry a lot.
But on more serious note… sculpting wrinkles is all about finding good reference images. As for basic techniques you can watch for example Clothing Sculpting with Michael Knowland on zBrushCentral.
For Setsuko’s clothes I used Marvelous Designer with some minor touchups. It’s great program for simulating realistic folds and wrinkles on clothes, but I have intense love-hate relationship with it, because I find it really awesome and at the same time I fail to create anything reasonable due to my lack of understanding how more advanced clothes are made. So I use it for simpler clothes (like in this case) to speed things up and even so I have weird feeling that sculpting would take almost the same amount of time.
very small update for today - I’ve made geta (shoes)

Now I’m off to fight with fibermesh - wish me luck
Because fibermesh still hates me, I’ve started sculpting Seita, but it seems that sculpting 14-years old japanese boy is beyond me - whatever I do the face looks off. I will try to find some references tommorrow, 'cause right now I’m heading nowhere :banghead: . This is what I did before I gave up:
