HCR MINI-Challenge #42: Goodbye Ghibli: Castle in the sky, Old Robot

#1

I hadn’t really watched any studio Ghibli films, only Howls, so this was a good excuse to binge watch a hella lot of them, can’t believe I never watched them until now. Another chap just posted that he was doing the robot from Laputa Castle in the sky, seeing as I had already started it, I better post something

I’ve done most of the base robot body mesh, gona take it into mudbox now.

Off to a good start my friend! Looking forward seeing your progress

#3

I’ve always loved the original design of that robot. Glad to see 2 artists giving it a shot.

Good start !

I havn’t progressed that much but here is where I am at, currently about to paint the head in Mari, and make some mask layers. What I’m hoping to do is use vray fur to create a mossy looking layer (the body will probably have a more grassy look ontop though). I decided I better test it first before continuing any more on the body.

Ok I got some messages about the challenge and about the future…

Just a little update, seeing as we are getting a small extension, much needed

Had a play with the fur, seems to look ok, should look like moss once it has textures. Also started working on the body and legs, legs are uv’d and ready to paint and such.

How’s it going for my competitor? A bit stuck at importing displacementmaps from mudbox to maya/maxwell atm… Gonna rig it soon and do some posing, but have no idea in what pose!

Keep it up my friend!

#8

Yeah really slow, just a lil bit here and there, theres so much left to do, atm I’m just uving stuff. What problems are you having importing? I’m not bothering with displacements, just proxying everything at max res.

#9

Uving the vines atm

Ok, still it IS progress! Yeah, always like that, you want to do so much…

Have been working with maya for years and years, but never with modo. I haven’t found the correct exporting / settings for getting it to work with a maxwell material and the dicplacement from mudbox… either it looks like crap or not at all right now. But will dive into it tomorrow morning…

That is one way to do it, yes!

Found this tut on making moss that I’m gonna try out:

Are you creating the ivy by hand? Thinking about doing some meshforces on the robot from speedtree.

#11

That was really interesting how they did that, quite smart really. I’ve never used Maxwell so probs can’t help you there, more a Vray fanboy. The ivy I’ve done is by hand. Have never tried speed tree but looks pre interesting, especially its super easy integration with the likes of unreal engine

I’m definitely not going to be able to finish my robot to a standard that I want to submit a final copy for this challenge so I won’t, although I’m still going to finish it. I must say this is my first challenge and I started a wee bit into it, but I’ve really enjoyed doing it and can’t wait to start the next one spending the full length of time working on it. Wish I had known about them sooner.

Sorry to hear it! It happens… I also started out a bit late and it is definitly not finished in the way I wanted…

Hope you finish it and I look forward seeing then!
