HCR MINI-Challenge #28: Comic Book Masters
I do wish someone would do a model in the style of Jack Kirby.

MMMH…jack kirby? …may the thing must be cool to model that way! very difficult style to represent in 3d!! A true challenge i think! NIIIIICEEE!
Hello all!
That´s a nice topic and I shall join too!
But I do have a question in regards the rules. It says that we must sculpt something inspired by the style of some comic artist. Ok… Then we have this example:
“…The movie Version of Iron Man, done in the style of Steve Ditko…”
What I see is that we must choose this ‘one thing’ and make it in the style of this ‘second thing’. But what people are doing is just getting this ‘one nice drawing of this famous guy’ to make it 3D. Which is pretty much what we all do when studying to get better and tro try new things, etc…
So my question is: can we just pick a nice drawing and sculpt it?
Yes, but the concept of the chllenge is to try to see what makes the artist style unique.
Lately I have noticed a trend to downplay the artists, in all media, who produce the content.
I wanted to try my part to avoid that.
I am looking forward to your entry.

Is it okay to base on Japanese artists’ characters? example like Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece?
I worked for Mark Silvestri for 3 years at Top Cow, and I don’t think comic artists
in general are bothered by this kind of tribute stuff in a copyright sense, unless of course
they see a threat and decide to set some sort of coordinated example.
I think they would probably be more concerned with all the people creating free art though,
but that would mainly be for exploitation or ‘art surplus’ reasons. I think that’s the difference
with CG and comic books, where cg people seem to gain notoriety in a large part through
their initial forum presence, and many other cg artists take note of this, and chase this carrot
on a stick of being ‘discovered’ by trying to create outstanding gallery work…
Really good artists living in the heart of Russia, struggling away with a render hoping that it will not be ‘declined’ for ‘3D Stills gallery’ inclusion yet again, and that Peter Jackson may somehow stumble upon it and hire them on the spot.
With comics the main way to be discovered is through a portfolio revue at a comic con.
I’m mixed up because I have my feet the fence, and created a gameproject/comic that I released
for free online, almost as a reflexive action! I think I’ve been inadvertently trained to make free comics,
which would probably be very bad for comics if this is contagious!
I’ve been thinking of this for the past few day though, and can go on and on and on about it.
Ive been meaning to get a start in character modelling, it’s not really my thing i generally do mechanical animations/vfx stuff.
But i thought a challenge is probably the best way to get some experience trying to decide what to do just now, I am a big fan of the BLAME! series by Tsutomu Nihei. Probably not the easiest style to go for but I like a challenge.
Cant decide whether to do a model of Killy or Sanakan i’ll have to have a good think about how i’m going to go about doing this.
