HCR MINI-Challenge #28: Comic Book Masters

#1

Sculpt
a character/ creature, a diorama, or Character Series based on the STYLE of an influential comic book artist .
Some artists I would suggest are (and you may pic your own…:

[ul]
[li]Alan Davis[/li][li]Carl Barks[/li][li] Eric Powell[/li][li]George Perez[/li][li]Herge[/li][li][Jack Kirby](http://forums.cgsociety.org/)[/li][li]Jim Lee[/li][li]Jose Luis Garcia Lopez[/li][li]Moebius[/li][li]Mike Mignola[/li][li]Steve Ditko[/li][li]Tim Sale[/li][li]Jim Lee[/li][li]Walt Simonson[/li][/ul]
Why do this?

Instead of doing the 6,002 model of Wolverine, we can do a challenge that actually celebrates the art of the actual heroes of the sequential art field.

So you are tasked with modeling images, and characters, INSPIRED by the style of a comic book master.

There are three ways to participate:

       Single Character or Creature:
You can pick whatever character or creature you wish fromthe selected artist body of work.
       Some examples:

[ul]
[li]A self portrait done in the style of Mike Mignola[/li][li] The movie Version of Iron Man, done in the style of Steve Ditko[/li]

[/ul]Diorama:
You may sculpt a character or creature inside the appropriate environment.
Some diorama examples:

[ul]
[li] The Fantastic Four inside the Fantastic Car fighting thr Monsters of the Mole…Done in the Style of Jack Kirby[/li][/ul]
Character Series:
This type of entry requires you will try to do as many representations as you can from an individual Character done in different Artist styles

Some examples:
Superman by Jim Lee, George Perez, Jack Kirby

       Bust :
This type of entry requires you will try to a bust of your favorite Character/creature, or a likeness of your Comic Book master himself.

       THE CHALLENGE:___________________________

       So lets recap....
Sculpt an original 3d scene scenes based on the style of a Comic book Master.

ALL MODELS should be done FROM SCRATCH. No premade (as in before this challenge) base models are allowed.
The idea of this "mini-challenge" is to simulate an impossible deadline for a project. The artists will have at their discretion how detailed the models they will be working on, and the amount of models, and if the models will be shaded and or rigged.
The key is to sculpt good dynamic representations the work of Frazetta.
A big part of the challenge is that the modeler will have to scavenge all the reference he needs .
       Another thing:

MODELING should be THE KEY POINT for judging final entries, not the shading.
But displacement maps are allowed in all models.

Note :You may shade and texture your model if you wish, but great modeling is what we are looking for..

       CAN YOU DO IT?

What is the HARDCORE MODELING CHALLENGE?

The idea of these HARDCORE MINI CHALLENGES is to push the modeling skills participants while learning from the past. T o get past preconceptions of the limits of digital art. To push digital artists into the world of sculptors & artisans. But we will have variety on these mini challenges. Sometimes we will sculpt a model based on a masterpiece, but on other times we might do Jet fighter or a landmark....
The only thing that will be consistent is the SHORT DEADLINES.
At the end of the challenge, the participant should have a finished collection of entries. Keep in mind contest of high difficulty you will have ONE MONTH and TWO WEEKS to do the challenge, but the rewards, even if you don't win, will be your improved skills in speed and accuracy.

       EVALUATION CRITERIA:______________________

Detailed RESEARCH, and attention to detail are key for ALL entries. Please before doing an entry do your homework.
The best model will be selected by an open vote
       for these categories:

[ul]
[li]Best WIP thread[/li][li]Best Beauty Render[/li][li]Best Diorama[/li][li]Best Bust[/li]
and the big one of course:
[/ul]
[ul]
[li]Best Model[/li][/ul]The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

       DATELINE:
       December 15th 2010

YOU HAVE One MONTH and TWO WEEKS to do the challenge.

Strontium Dog (the gritty and cool Simon Harrison version, not the other boring one…)

I’d kill to see a decent version of Johnny Alpha with his eletro-knux…

#6

@RobertoOrtiz: Mike Mignola link goes to Jack Kirby and you listed Jim lee twice.

#7

cool topic

#8

The thumbnail in the header reminded me of an old work/test by one of my fellow countrymen. The work is a cel-shaded 3D model of Hellboy that looks a lot like the original, and it can be viewed here:

I have a few questions regarding this contest.

  1. Is it allowed to base my work on a cartoon based on a movie, like Ari Folmans Waltz With Bashir, where the cartoon technically was published after the movie?

  2. All the artists mentioned as inspiration are fiction-cartoon artists, would it be possible to base my work on “new journalism”- style cartoons, like The Photographer by Emmanuel Guibert or Palestine by Joe Sacco?

Thank you =)

#11

I’d like to see some Manara women in this challenge…

#12
  1. I would prefer if there a more solid connection, but it should be kosher. But if there is a specific style from a sequential artist, knock yourself.

  2. It is sequential art, so yes you can

I was wondering when someone would bring him up.

#13

best topic ever!

#14

Don`t want to brake everybodys enthusiasm, but…
I have just one question and concern here:

Won`t we run into copyrightproblems while doing this?

(Would like to do a Barks Duckscene, but could I use it lateron,
as I have always heard, that the Disney-company is pretty though
about there copyright?)

#15

It is tribute, and for educational purpouses.
The challenge itself has no physical rewards so no good or services are being exchanged.

As long as no one makes dime of this, (and trust me, no one is), it should be kosher.

If hte artist has concerns about copyrighted material he can create his own original concept in 3D, using the STYLE of the selected master.

Note: One of my clients is a lawyer at the US Trademarks Office. I can pass this by him if you have any futher concerns.

#16

good topic, but why do you keep using the word “DATELINE” instead of “DEADLINE” ?

#17

More of a positive vibe??

#18

This is huuuuuuuuuuuuuge!!! Can’t wait to get started!!

#19

Hi All,
this sounds very interesting…
I also want to participate in this… but I have some questions in my mind… so please help me…

  1. I want to model Hellboy from the movie… so I can i do it or i have to follow the concept art from the comics. As I liked the movie so i want to follow it.

  2. Can i start another model once i feel i have done with the first model? or i have to spend the whole dateline on one character only?

Please Reply ASAP so that i can start working

1, Yes yo ucan model the Hellboy version of the film, but you have to follow the style of a established sequential art artist. Since the concept art was done by Mike Mignola, you can use his concept drawings as a basis for your model.

  1. Yes. You can do as many models as you wish. Hell if you get tired with a model, you can start another.
