HCR MINI-Challenge #28: Comic Book Masters - Jean Giraud

#1

This is my first HMC, so be gentle. As such, even though the rules suggest not to, I think a WIP thread for me will be helpful.

I’m not too much in the know as far as comic book artists go. I never cared about who drew them when I was a young’un, and I haven’t read many comic books since then. I just picked up Watchmen a couple years ago at the request of a friend of mine. Anyhow, I liked this challenge so I did some research and found Jean Giraud. What I’ve seen I love! I’m a big fan of Peter Chung, and I can now see where he got his inspiration.

So I have two concepts in mind, and I haven’t chosen which I will be doing. I suspect I’ll do both eventually, but I’ll be choosing one in particular for this challenge.

Idea #1.

I’ll be replicating this sketch done by George Perez, with a few changes…
A. Different characters. Mary Marvel was easy enough to find reference images for, but the other two? Forget it. Besides, these are DC characters, which leads me to my second change
B. The bomb will be replaced by the severed zombie head of Wasp (AKA Janet Van Dyne) from the Marvel Zombie universe. Just thought it was a bit more dynamic.

Idea #2:

A scene from Lost, such as this one, though I have a few in consideration. If this is against the rules, please let me know, as it’ll make my choice that much simpler

Oh. These would both be dioramas, in the spirit of McFarlane Toys.

So I’ve decided to go with the first idea. After about a half dozen throw-aways, this is my first concept sculpt. This is Wasp as a zombie, only in the scene she’ll have hair. I decided to go with a “sexier” zombie (the old school George Romero-type zombies), as I think this represents Moebius’ style a little better.

C&C would be immensely helpful. The other concepts should be a little quicker…I might even pound them out tonight.

I just had a thought, so maybe I can get some C&C on this idea as well. What if I completely removed the neck, and made the bottom jaw robotic? I mean as far as fitting the style of Moebius’ work.

Due to a revamp of my portfolio eating the majority of last week and a few more projects on my plate, I’ve decided to scale back my submission. I’ll be doing Jubilee in the style of Jean Giraud. I might do a full scene if I have time, but I am removing myself from the Diorama submission.

Just wanted to update. I was afraid I would have to remove myself completely, but I think I can muster something up in a month :stuck_out_tongue:

WIP: This is taking much longer than I expected…and I’ve learned I’m a bit of a perfectionist

Anyhow, here are my stills: you can click on them to see my Flickr account. That contains the individual shots in greater detail (and size).

I would love some C&C please! Also, as a point of clarity, I am mimicking the portrayal of Jubilee in the picture below on the left. However, I am mimicking the style of the image on the right (Moebius).

Another step forward. Not sure about the hair yet. I’m doing a shorter style than the concept image. I’m also not crazy about the kneepads, so I’ll probably redo those. I think I just need to do a few more pieces for the body (hands, arm guards, and her signature pink sunglasses), then I’ll do some fine detail sculpting, and I should be done!

C&C please…please please please! I could really use some input!

Again, you can click on the pictures to open my WIP set on Flickr. They’re arranged from older at the top to newer at the bottom. Thanks for viewing!

I’m learning a lot through this process, I must say. Just a really quick update with a somewhat finalized body:
