HCR MINI-Challenge #20:15 Expressions ONE Model

#21

Well, you’ve got a point there.

I’m just thinking of ‘love’ for the character I’m going to do. It usually consisted of a sheepish grin with blush marks on the cheeks. Not exactly convincing. Guess I’ll literally be going to the drawing board.

I was having problems imaging some of these emotions but then started to think of them within certain circumstances, as opposed to just generic facial expressions, and found that made things a lot easier.

For example, if you were doing lust you might imagine a character doing a wolf-whistle, a jaw-dropping tongue lolling dribble, or a raised eyebrow “how you doing?” confident smirk.

All the emotions listed have a lot of latitude if you’re looking for it: lust over someone, lust over an item/object, lust for life. I’m thinking of modelling Charlie Parker (jazz musician) and lust for him could be in a desperate sweaty need for heroin, an intense concentration on the creation of a beautiful riff during a performance, a cool needy look upon seeing his wife-to-be Chan the first time across a smoke filled room or even just a simple “god damn!” expression at a passing beauty. I think they’re all very different but are more of less encompassed by the word Lust.

I’m happy with a set list of 15 because I think it will encourage me to look deeper into my subject, find what makes them tick, and bring that into the model. For me that’s the appealing part of the challenge.

A very well put together post, axiomatic. And I agree whole-heartedly. As 3d artists we have the ability to convey and portray just about anything we want to. Just because the challenge is 1 face/15 expressions, doesn’t mean you have to model a head and only a head. Creating an entire Torso with arms, or even perhaps the whole body can give you the ability to lend a lot of weight to the expression on the face. There are many methods, concepts and tools at our disposal. Like you said, you just gotta dig deeper and analyze a little and you can do anything you want. Think outside the box. Instead of saying “I can’t do this”, why not say “How am I going to do this”?

Alright, I’m sold. You guys are quite convincing and the more I thought about it the more the ideas came to me. Can do.

#25

Any word on a verdict for this? I’m getting started on my base mesh, I’m gonna need to grab some reference pictures for my face here soon.
Are we sticking with Roberto’s list, or picking from a larger one?

#26

Ill add at least 5 more possible entries tonight…

I think Its a great challenge. Lets dont mix up Expressions and Emotions. Most animators and artists are familiar with Facial Expressions. But here as far as I understand is the challenge of bringing up a certain Emotion onto the face of a character. Crying, screaming, yawning can be an Expression but is not really what we are talking about here. I think its a great deal to bring an emotion onto your sculpt and hence evoking a certain emotional response from viewer. I also think that when Roberto talked about Deatils Its not just modelling detail. its actually what we call attention to the detail which in this case would be the detail of subtle and intricate impacts on faces due to a certain emotional feeling. Hard no doubt. And I agree to Turx on this that some emotions can only be expressed through ‘movement’ or in our terms animation. Well thats may be not the medium at the moment and we have to study something new and something different which is indeed exciting.
Best of luck to everyone.

#39

very interesting challenge !

can I support the face expression with body language ?
sad … tilt the head down
hope … tilt the head up

stuff like that ?

is this allowed or it has to be static bust with a straight head pose ?

for me … it will be impossible to do this challenge without body language

Edit

one more question

suitable edge loops for animation is a must ?
