[/b]THE CHALLENGE:___________________________

Sculpt, in a period of 1 month, one or more faces wit their corresponding 15 expressions. For this challenge, attention to detail is essential.

The idea of this “mini-challenge” is to simulate an impossible deadline for a project. The artists will have at their discretion how detailed the models they will be working on, what program they will be using, the amount of models, and if the models will be shaded/ rigged. But the model will have to be original creation based on EXTENSIVE research.

At at the end of the challenge the final model will have to look like a scene that we might see in a cg movie or a commercial.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:______________________

Detailed RESEARCH and attention to detail are key for ALL entries. Please before doing an entry do your homework.

The best model will be selected by an open vote

for these categories:
[ul]
[li]BEST CARTOONY CHARACTER [/li][li]BEST REALISTIC CHARACTER[/li][li]BEST ANIMAL CHARACTER[/li][li]BEST REPRESNTATION OF EMOTIONAL SPECTRUM[/li][li]BEST WIP [/li][/ul]and the big one of course:
[ul]
[li]BEST MODEL[/li][/ul]The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner

Designed by me.

This challenge is interesting…apart from having some fun sculpting there will be whole lot of studies too…ill be getting started soon.

roberto you threw in disgust twice. Could you replace it with something else? Thanks

Sorry but some of the feelings you wrote above are too hard to make.

For example, lust can only be an eye sparkle which you can’t show on a model. A woman biting her lower lip can be an expression of lust, but how can you do that for a monkey or a kid model? Also can’t imagine a macho character biting his lip to express his lust.

I’d rather choose some real facial expressions like Smiling, Screaming, Crying instead of the emotions which are really hard to express like Love, Hate, Lust, Jealousy, Pride, Courage, Shame etc…(doesn’t say that they can’t be expressed on every character but really hard and sometimes impossible because of the facial structure.)

That could be an option to make people to choose 15 expressions from a bigger list which also includes those hard-to-do emotions. So people can choose from that list if that expression suits to their model.

Or, I think such a list like below would be better to fit nearly all human characters.

-Anger
-Fear
-Sadness
-Disgust
-Enjoyment
-Screaming
-Smiling (Duchenne Smile)
-Laughing
-Crying
-Surprised-Shocked
-Yawning
-Contempt-Sneer
-Worry
-Whistling
-Puffing out cheeks =)

Also some other expressions that can be shown depending of the character:

  • Guilty (think a kids face in front of his mother, that broke something in the house)

  • Curling lips (think someone’s face when he/she has no clue about the question or the problem.)

  • Biting lips (the emotions jealousy, lust can be shown with that)

  • Tongue out (varies depends of the emotion)

You can find detailed researches and explanations about expressions from Books.Google.com

Here are links to some screenshots from “Handbook of Emotions” book about expressions. (captured via books.google.com).

Well I do like the idea of making this challenge hard .

Hell the idea is to give a challenge to the artist of making the
quidelines work.

#6

Can you have fantasy creatures?

#7

Making smile, laugh, scream expressions on a realistic character are not easy also. (Lots of people make freaky look on their models while trying to achieve a smile.) Actually such main expressions use most of the facial muscles and they are technically and visually harder to demonstrate on a model. But it’s easier to understand the goal with these expressions. That was my point when i offer to change your list.
If this challenge’s aim is to make people thinking about expressions, instead of making people to work on them, then i think it’ll succeed.

Other then the above conversation, i really would like to see some reference images of facial expressions of love and pride.

Anyway hope all participants enjoy it.
Good luck to all.

#8

I agree with turx on those - already the participants who’ve started their threads have chosen real faces to create their expressions - making even 3 well will be hard indeed… I have to concur that making a good smile’s a challenge in itself and the number of horrid ones out there’s huge!

Anyway, here are some suggestions that might be doable…

Happy
Sad
Angry
Confused
Tired
Shocked/Surprised
Scared
Serious
Flirty
Disgusted
Puffing out cheeks
Silly
Sarcastic
blank
Pleased
Irritated
Drunk
Ill

I like Roberto’s list because I feel there is a higher level of thought and research going into what facial features and micro-expressions add up to display an emotion. It’s very challenging and I like being forced to think deeper than to be told what face to make. However, I will agree that, at least for myself, some of them would be too difficult.

In the end, I’ll do whatever the challenge requires, and I do like the idea of perhaps creating a larger list and allowing people to pick. Maybe do something like half abstract emotions (love, courage, etc…) and half common facial expressions (sneer, blow cheeks, etc…).

#10

This is not abad idea…

#11

yeah picking’s good

#12

I’m doing a cartoon character and some of these emotions might be impossible IDK. Besides I was planning to pick out 15 expressions from the source that I like, not 15 specific emotions. More choices for the emotions would be much appreciated, maybe 25?

#13

I have to agree with Intervain. Her list seems a lot more doable and understandable since pure emotions themselves are very hard, if not impossible to capture and their emergence on the face alone more like translates into those “looks” she has described. Those looks are what is then interpreted by the viewer to have a certain emotion as a source. Body language is a huge factor in conveying emotion and since this is only for the face, I agree some translation of Roberto’s initial list might indeed be in order.

Also a larger list to pick 15 expressions from sounds like good idea to me, ie “sceptical, intoxicated, focused, contemplative, exhausted etc etc” could be possible additions for a more subtle range of expressions as well.

Cheers!

#14

i also like intervains list…

#15

3d.sk had a great resource of expressions. I’m no longer a member but maybe someone who is can pull thumbs down for ref?

This challenge is gonna be tough. Especially for the guys going for a realistic approach. Cartoons will be easier as people won’t crit it to hell and back on little bits. But saying that I think its an awesome challenge. Now all I need is a face… hmmm.

#16

This is an awesome challenge Roberto, great idea!

Like Intervain, i agree with Turx on the list with choices! that will be great. The more choices the better

Good luck to everyone, i’m really looking forward to the entries

#17

There’s some good points were made on this thread. Out of the two lists I think I prefer Roberto’s better, though. It gives me a feeling almost like on the CG talk daily sketch forum. A topic is presented, such as “falling down” and you interpret it. I think it would be really fun to try and interpret something like lust or pride. Sure, there might not be a technical, or accurate description of what a lustful expression might look like. But the fact of the matter is that there IS a look people get when they are feeling lusty. Just because it isn’t easy or obvious, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. If you’re commissioned to make these expressions for your work, then you’ll just have to do your best to get your message accross. Let’s be creative here when it comes to these. Everyone’s “smiling” expression will be more or less the same, but something like “love” might be completely different on every entry.

Although Intervain’s list is VERY good, and the suggestion to pick 15 out of a certain amount is also a great suggestion, I’d like to force myself to interpret certain feelings. I’ll feel like I’ve done a good job if I can model “Love” and others can recognize it. I won’t have the same feeling of accomplishment after Modeling a Smile. Everyone will recognize it as a smile whether it’s good or bad.

RageOfAges : Wow, really good counter-argument. That’s what I was trying to say earlier in the thread, but you’ve done a much better job than I could!
