HCM #29: Sci-Fi Icon - Captain Falcon - F-ZERO X

#1

I finally started gathering reference for the character I chose to model: Captain Falcon from F-Zero X. For the head I chose actor Clint Walker. Since the cap is wearing an adherent suit I’ll model it as a body, and later correct it into clothing. I’m using LightWave 3D and later on I’d like to try out Mudbox.

Falcon…PUNCH!!!

show me da moves ! he’s the undisputed king of smash.:wip:
Here’s my first update, I’m taking the chance to revise some anatomy, trying to flesh out the myological landmarks in each region of the body with an appropriate flow. Still very rough, but the night is young!

#4

small update, I started to put more detail in the mesh, after having adjusted the proportions…still need to flesh out forearms and legs, after which I can start reworking the morphology of each area and hopefully step down some loops.

#5

did a little work on the head, and found some decent reference for mr Clint Walker, I think he would make a good captain falcon.

#6

I would advise you look at the most basic forms first. You’ve jumped to trying to define muscles before taking care of the overall proportions and shapes of the body. The upper torso looks ok, but the pelvis and legs need some attention. Spend some time rounding out the shapes of the legs for example, and then work on putting the anatomy detail back in.

#7

thanks very much for the feedback, you’re absolutely right. I seem to have a bad habit of getting lost into this or that detail and losing sight of the body as a whole…sometimes I don’t even realize I do it, then when I zoom back out I suddenly notice that something’s wrong. Anyway I’ll follow your suggestion and start revising the basic forms from the legs.

#8

tried to rework the proportions and general shapes…still loads to fix on the body before I can start focusing on the head, which I want to get a good likeliness with the reference (even if most of it will be covered by the helmet).

#9

still working on it! I decided to destroy some parts and re-model them as they really weren’t correct (for example where the arm is attached to the torso)…I also spread the arms out in the traditional T pose, as it appears to be the first logical step towards cleaning up the morphology of the arm.

Nice for your skill, remain in clench “Bleib am Ball”.

From this Poly structur is a hard to skulp in a 3D Modeling Programm,
you do not change on Skulp tool?

#11

thanks for the reply, I don’t quite understand the first sentence though…anyhow the main reason why I’m not sculpting is that I’m not familiar at all with mudbox (which is what I have installed) and I think in terms of this being an exercise in character modeling it really doesn’t matter what I use, but the model itself and what I learn from the process. Secondly I also find translating structure into correct topology useful in terms of studying the primer, but I realize this might be considered dated since the advent of sculpting.

#12

not too long until deadline, I quickly made a rudimentary helmet just to see how it would look like…still working on the body and revising quite a lot.

#13

started working on some gear, whilst often revising the body (for one I’m not liking the legs)…for the pose I’ll do the classic captain falcon stance, with a hand on the hip and the other saluting…probably going to leave it to the last day, which should be monday. Hopefully I’ve advanced a bit during the process and I’ll do better on the next challenge.

#14

i think it looks cool, better than what i could do anyhow.
but for later projects you should try to make out the basic shapes as several has suggested.
But i’m guessing most of his body will be covered in gear, so it might turn out cool, but those legs are kinda disturbing.
Try do what you need and if you have the time to change more on his body before deadline spend your time doing that.

good luck and hope you finish in time.

hehehe yeah the legs are looking funky, I’m trying to make them passable at the moment. I’m not using any specific reference but rather trying to mold an ideal body from what I’ve studied, and since I’m not advanced enough it’s looking quite strange…all excuses of course!

as for the basic shapes I’ll try and do better next challenge (can’t wait!!). Anyhow thanks so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it.
