Has anyone tried Modo?

#1

I’m a 100% LW lover, but I wondered if anyone has tried Modo and what your thoughts about it are.

Here’s the modo forum

From a Lightwave user’s perspective, Modo has a lot of similarities with Lightwave Modeler. If you’ve got 4 points and you want to create a polygon, you it ‘p’. If you want to flip a polygon you hit ‘f’. It even saves its files in .lwo format by default.

Lightwave + Modo = a good combination.

One great thing about modo is the ability to draw tubes on an object just by clicking the mouse on the object. The tube constrains perfectly to the object and you can adjust its density as you work.

magic bevel needs a feature like that.

I’d like to see the moderator’s assist this user by moving this to the modo forum.

An opinion: it has lots of what was promised years ago. Modeler, grown up and cared for.

Well, for starters, the CGTalk modo forum is mainly Maya users.

It’s bizarre that Lightwavers can’t discuss another product to be used in conjunction with Lightwave. If rules are made about discussion of 3rd party products, then those rules should apply to all 3rd party products. There shouldn’t be any discrimination. Should people who use Zbrush with Lightwave only discuss Lightwave issues on the Zbrush forum?

So what’s it to be? Discuss all 3rd party products or no 3rd party products. Nobody was saying “throw out Lightwave”. People just want to know how they can integrate Modo into their Lightwave workflow. People use them together, and sometimes issues or questions will arise that need to be discussed.

Modo& LW can set Patch division to 1 …but

modo can not freeze to 1
Lw can freeze to 1 :banghead:

Bump!!

About Modo: I use it with LW. It´s GREAT!! It´s something like the LW modeler with lot´s of advantages: Edges, constraints (as said before), easy, quick and powerful falloffs,… and many others. If you use LW you will only need a couple of hours to get familiar with modo  and you won´t live without it!

#9

I don’t see it that way, though lots like to frame it that way.

I see it as no one answering the question nor there being a question posed here.
Whether someone uses another app is inconsequential.

There is no real question here; this is a trolling opportunitiy.

#10

No trolls here. Everyone is a known Lightwave user on this forum.

Some people have positive comments about using Modo with Lightwave. Others have negative comments, like this one…

That’s OK. You hear what’s good about it. You hear what’s bad about it. These are constructive comments.

People want to find out about the experience of bringing 3rd party modelers into the Lightwave rendering and animating workflow.

BTW I do all my rendering in Lightwave.

#11

Nope. I never realy felt that LW modeler is insufficient for modeling fast and easy. So why switch?
I’ll think about it though when they have a complete CG app to offer.

#12

By no means is this a trolling expedition. It just the plain fact of what are the thoughts of individuals that use both Lightwave and Modo. I can see advantages with Modo, but are they enough to warrent buying the program. I’m a guaranteed LW user. I won’t use anything else, but Modo caught my eye…

I think you all need to relax a little…

As I said before, Modo’s native file format is .LWO. The caveat is that Luxology has added various optional extensions to the LWO file format that includes support for things like edge weighting, n-gons and various other features.

So if you import a modo-created LWO into Lightwave then save the object again from within Lightwave it may get saved without these extra extensions.

Because of this I still model in Modo with just 4 point polygons, for rendering in Lightwave. For people who want to model using n-gons there are work-arounds to make the mesh compatible with Lightwave (ie you model in n-gons, then split them into 4-point polys before rendering in Lightwave).

#15

I am a Lightwave user and have owned Modo since early late September. I still use Lightwave Modeler along with Modo. I think they work well together. There are some tools in Modo I like better and some in Modeler I like better.

#16

I purchased Modo the other day and I’m quite happy with it, but I do need to get used to it’s method. I think I will switch it so that it behaves more like Modeler.

I am relaxed and no tension here. I just asked a simple question.

I noticed that at this moment that there doesn’t seem to be any user-based support for the application. By that I mean plug-ins. I’ve looked around, but nadda. Mind you I can’t find anything on the net, even though I design for it. Go figure. I really wish that there was a plug-in to convert trigons to quads, but I guess that will come eventually.

I think I’ll play around with it until I have some real time to get into the app.

Thanks everyone for your replies, and by no means do I want this post to end. Keep it coming 'cause I’d like to read about more experiences.

Thank you.

Do you know anyone who scripts for Modo? I’m looking for a conversion tool that turns Trigons into quads. Merge_Trigons for Lightwave is just too slow and not very effective.

Well, you obviously have not used Modo then. After using modo for a while I dread having to do anything in LW’s modeler. Modo is much better, you don’t have all the constant popups, you can change almost anyhthing with realtime previews, the interface is very streamlined and does not get in the way as modeler sometimes does. Modeling with edges and Ngons makes things much easier and faster even if you have to divide them up later. Edges… well this is the main reason I don’t use modeler anymore. I can’t really describe how much of a diference edges make in modeling. Everything in modo feels like it’s part of the program, you can bevel anything (ponts, edges, faces) with a single hotkey. I think the biggest problem with discussing modo in a lightwave group is that there are a few peopl who seem to take it as a personal insult because the Lux guys quit working for newtek for whatever reason they did. Personaly I thing it’s foolish to avoid a great program for such petty reasons.

All of what’s been said could’ve been gotten from a Modo list.

Marketeering at it’s best.
