While I was procrastinating to work on my 3D stuff today
I tried to pretend that I was a concept artist. Don’t worry I won’t
quit my day job, hey wait a minute I don’t have a day job.
Well maybe now I can be KOOL like “E5”… most likely maybe not

Okay this is a concept that I was working on with “E5” it is my take on a concept he did for me.
I’m trying to go for an ape gorilla type feel, trying to show that it has mostly
upper body strength. I also wanted it to have a slouch bad kind of body posture,
because it is so tall and always has to stoop over to communicate to humans.
The first idea was to give it legs, but I then said to myself

“wheels would help out at the part in the story when the robot has to sneak up on someone”.
So a robot this size would be much more quieter on rubber wheels.
I drew the arm separate so I can show the body proportions better.

“E5” maybe you can do a redraw of it in the future. But for now
don’t even worry about it. I probably won’t be able to start working on this one
for weeks to come.

PEACE!

#203

I would like to take a shot at building that

Alex

#204

Hiya Omar,

I saw your concept and you said you would like me to redraw it…I got excited about the idea and well … surprise …here it is…hehe hope ya like it

#205

I forgotten how fast you can turn concepts out, that’s your arena.

Here are my ideas on the concept.
I think the lower part is a bit too bottom heavy.
I want to stress the feeling of a small foot print, the wheel in the back
gives it too stable of a look, kind of like it can stand up without power.
I want it to be clear that if the power goes off on this thing it will fall over very easily
As you know E5 this is a very important part of the story when it falls over.
So that’s why I made such a small back wheel, and may also make it retractable.
Or just take it off completely. The best thing that comes to mind is an upside down
pyramid with 2 wheels very top heavy. The idea is more of a character style then
a practical machine style. even though the lower parts you drew looks great mechanically
and visually . It is more a issue of scale.

Over all I think I will stick a bit closer to my concept. Only because
I can see this one very clear in my mind of how it will work and even how to model
all the parts, however I will still need your help in fleshing out the details.

Most of the time if I draw something , and I don’t do that often , most likely
I have a real good idea of where I’m going with it.
I really luv the way you laid it out and clarified the idea. That’s what I will
really need you to help me with. I was trying to think of so many ways to show
how the arm fits, and when I seen your concept, I was thinking why didn’t I think of that!

#206

Okay here is the plan for production of this model.
I want a real high level of detail, as with all my models in this project.
I will break the concept into parts, head, chest, arm, abdomen, suspension.
I will work with “E5” to create explicit details of each part.

I will then assign parts to separate modelers, that way each person
can focus on making their part to the best quality they can and won’t
have to worry about having enough time or energy to work on the other parts.

I’m looking for advanced mechanical 3DS MAX modelers,
who can create complex forms using mesh smooth.

If that plan don’t work I will just have to do it myself  :stuck_out_tongue:
“E5” I’ll send you a e-mail as soon as I can to get you started on this.
Alex, I’m still waiting on the other models you were supposed to do
.

#207

I’m also looking for someone who may be able to setup some still frames
In Adobe after effects, and know how to animate basic movement of frames and blurs and sound clips
and so on

Here are 2 shots done by “E5” for the 2D story animatics.
He has done a few more and the plan is to tell the story quickly in 2d then go over it in 3D.

Elelment5 - Man your concept skills are just amazing, love the redesign you did.

BOY1DA - You project is shaping up quite nicely man, keep it up…Looking good

#209

Everything is comin’ together a bit better for you now BOY1DA, thats good. Concepts and Animatics are well needed and its good that your starting to get there, with the help from E5 of course. I like the idea of the robots design. E5 will brew something up really good :D.

#210

Sorry dude Got an internship at a video game company so it absorbed a lot of my time. What exactly did you want me to do? Could you throw me a concept to model it off of.

Thanks
Alex

#211

Hiya Omar,

Cool, so do you want me to leave the robot for now? come back to it later.
Great to see some of the storyboards up… :applause:

@Kid Mesh, tdotmusiq … Thanx :slight_smile:

#212

Here’s my first contribution to the project. Hope you guys like. The bottom one is the finalized version…

#213

Dude that rocks

Alex

#214

Thanks Sculpter!

I’ve completed all the texturing and modeling for the first level of the room.
So I had a chance to play with the lighting. So here is what I came up with.

This one is my favorite one, I like it because it looks very dramatic and intense.
I may use this for the part of the story when the power gets cut off, and the emergency power kicks in.
All the low Power blue lights stay on and the only other light source will be the flash light on Tera’s gun.

This one should be when the lights and power level are normal. Any brighter and the mood that I’m going for gets lost.

This is a test render of the chair and gimble,
I have a white and blue light at the top and blue lights coming form the monitors.

This one is just to show the complete textures on the gimble. With no shadows from the lights.

Well now it’s time for me to work on the second level,
it will have a freight elevator and will also have the “Rail Runner” robot on the roof.

#216

I like the lighting too…you really have done an excellent job on that set…garbage…floor stains add nice grit elements…and the glowing light sources…wow!

#217

hey boys and girls this stuff is starting to look very cool!! BTW have you animated anything yet? If not I would like to help if possible? My animations skills are not the strongest but thats why I am wanting to help so I can build on them!! Let me know!!

Thanks
Rick

#218

Hey “SD” good to have you drop by. You have been doing some kool stuff over at your project too.

Hi Rick. I’ll send you a PM to fill you in “ASAP” thanks for your interest in the project.

#219

Very nice stuff BOY1DA. One suggestion I have is to change the colour of the lights when they are in “normal” mode. Maybe instead of the blue tone, use a yellow / orange / red tone. Just to have a strong contrast with the “emergency” mode.

It is starting to look amazing. I really like the emergency one, hehe. The other could use a little bit of work. Maybe add a little contrast without losing the dark mood. Play around with different light colors for example, so they are not all blue. Small things like that.

So, when do you think we will be seeing a shot in action with both the girl and the environment?

#220

Thanks for your comments, and your input is valued, it helps me to make them hard artistic decisions.
Many times when I was working on this I was wishing I had some input on what things may look good or better then others.
That happens to me all the time and I stop working and stare at the screen for hours thinking hmmmmm ”brown or blue”?

You are absolutely right about the lighting of the second one “NORMAL MODE”
And even though it is hard to tell the light I used to fill the room and make it brighter
is a brown light. My original idea was to make it have a brown sepia tone look.
With small blue glows, but the blue lights just worked good off the bat. And
the brown just looked very depressing. I also put a brown ambient to all the shading.
So maybe that is why the contrast is low on that shot as well. Maybe when
I use the brown lights I should use black ambient shading. I have more
lighting variations rendered but I didn’t want post them all because I didn’t
Want to bore anyone with tons of images of the same thing. So I just posted
the more extreme versions of the lighting. As well at this point I can still do
a lot of cheat color adjustments when it comes time for compositing.
Right now it’s just good to have the lights in the final positions.
Even though I still may move them a bit to cheat based on the final close up shots of the characters.

Well as far as the shot with Tera in it, I’m sooo very close. But so many small things
have to be right so I can enjoy putting it all together.
As you seen Tera already has the basic animation done. I even started to edit
The shots of her in After affects, with stand in models and a black backdrop.

But as far as this set piece goes. I need to make the upper level because when the camera
Goes low , to eye level or lower you can see that the set stops and has no ceiling or roof.
So that has to be done so I hope I can whip up a simple idea for the look of that part.
As well there will be 2 more secondary characters in this scene.
The first character will be a human sized robot it will be cloned so maybe 2 of them.
That robot is modeled already. And has been sitting on my hard drive for months now.
The other character will be Tera’s boyfriend but I may remodel him over make him a bit younger.
Oh and just the head and shoulders of one more character will be the scientist who Tera is taking to on the monitor.
If it comes down to it I may be able to cut Tera’s boyfriend out of this scene.

After all that, looks like another good 2 months before we start seeing any final animated and rendered shots.

Well I hate to post without posting any pix, so here are some pix of some of that stuff I was talking about above.

This is a picture of the robot called G.R.I.M it is short for “General Robotic Industrial Machinery”
They are made to assist humans is normal mundane tasks.
The model is done, this is just an old render, with no lower legs, and it still needs to be textured.

In the first image it has no arms or legs just to show the body better.
It will have 4 arms in the end , I just have to copy the ones I have on the right side.

This is an old picture of “Patrick” Tera’s boyfriend. I most likely remodel him.
This model is about 3 years old.
