HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: Tex Hex

#1

Doubt if I’ll even get halfway through with this, busy with studying for exams. kicks university

So I was torn between either a more anthropomorphised version of thundercats, a more realistic Gummy bears, a hot hot She-Ra, or Tex Hex from Bravestarr.

As you can see I chose Tex Hex, and I can tell you, I almost gave up on that idea. Almost impossible to get a good picture of him, until I stumbled on to this beauty

The concept art belongs to Alexander von Wieding. This is what I want to try my hand at making.

Now back to my studies before starting with him.

Good luck with this, will be nice to see what comes of it.

#3

Good choice mate!

Some more reference pictures thanks to my good pal Youtube. Got a few other pics, but these are the best, plus they also show Tex Hex’s SkullWalker, something I’ll have to redo though. Where the hell am I going to get the time to do all this?

#5

It seems that I have an opponent here.

I want to make Tex too. :stuck_out_tongue:

#6

Personally, I wouldn’t bother with the SkullWalker and just focus on Tex himself. This challenge is well under way, so I wouldn’t give yourself too much work…

Wise words, Boone, wise words.
Teensy update, I dispise actually starting a character from scratch because I am completely and utterly terrible at…crud already forgot the name, the structure of the mesh, the way it’s built, anyway, I’m horrible at keeping that looking right. I usually just work from an already made basemesh that I did years ago, and now that I need to build from scratch…ugh…well, this is how far I went. In animated gif form! 8D

Yes, I know, didn’t get that far, but I guess that’s only because I’m so out of practice.

Edgeloops! I think that’s the word I’m looking for, unless I got it wrong. Contours maybe? It’s 1.15 am, can’t think straight, going to bed now.

Oh, just wanted to add, one thing I really like about Tex Hex, is that he’s wearing that tight cowboy clothes, meaning there’s no flapping in the wind kind of cloth on him. Especially those trussels that hangs so girly on Bravestarr. Only thing flapping on that animated corpse mutation is his hair and lipfuzz. Makes modeling him so much easier.

LOL your post cracked me up. What you were looking for was topology or polyflow. Interesting character and good luck building the base mesh. Just remember. Start very low resolution and push the points as far as they’ll go before adding more edge loops.

Funk yeah! Topology, geez it was bothering me all night not being able to remember that word.

#10

Great start sir! Seems as though you have a wonderful grasp on topology, not sure what you are afraid of?

#11

Geta-Ve: That’s because I’m practically copying the structure and placement of the vertexes almost exactly like my old model. I keep looking back at the old model and moving stuff around. I think if I was any better with topology I wouldn’t have to keep looking back, and just gotten on with it. Heck, I would have gotten the base of the body done by now if I wasn’t checking the older one’s structure all the time.

Re: Steyn.

Well, its looking good for now. Just remember to avoid triangles and use quads.

#13

Good golly miss molly I’m so far behind schedule it’s not even funny.

#14

It is looking good sir, and don’t feel bad about being behind schedule, I am too! lol

No real crits as of yet except maybe that he doesn’t look gauntly enough? But maybe you are planning to take him into ZB/MB and refine him further?

Cheers

#15

I would say that the head resembles Tex. Good work.

Today’s excuse for this late update is the fact that it’s my actual first time using the sculpting feature of Modo. Only used Modo to make models of bathrooms things, toilets, washbasins, faucets etc, that was for a previous job they were thinking of moving over to Modo, so I had to learn using Modo, which I gladly did, it’s a very nice product. But atm, am a bit rusty on it, so I had to go look up tutorials again on the luxology site. Got their Sculpting_in_layers tutorial open 24/7 in the background >_<

#17

You are doing a very good job. Dont let time turn you down.

Keep it up and for sure you´ll make a great entry on this challenge.

#18

Right, so, not an actual ‘update’ update, I am working on this, did the base of the boots and spurs, still need to add more detail to it, and I did his pants, only to remember he wears chaps, thankfully I haven’t started sculpting the pants, just did the base. But I digress, this is more of an update of reference pics of boots and chaps and cowboy things.

and apparently you can’t resize pictures. That or I don’t know how. I basically just resized by dragging the resize corner to get smaller thumblike pictures, but when posting, they go back to their original size.
