HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: Panthro

#1

LATEST UPDATES AT THE END OF THE THREAD

Well, with a challenge based on somehing like “80s cartoons” I cant resist any longer to start my own WIP thread so here it is  At first I wanted to try an exact copy of Panthro but the model quickly kinda took on a style of its own which Im running with…

Facial Modelling

Started with a basic plane that I drew some edges into, roughly defining the main edge loops before gradually extruding the faces back and working on good topology. I did a lot of researching in the ‘topology’ sticky in the modelling forum during this process

The ears are only really loosely defined at the moment so I’ll be tidying and adding detail to those next, I’ll have to grab some good ‘animal ear’ reference…

Reference Imagery

Heres a collection of the reference imagery that I have been using and also some inspiring works by other artists (I love those 2D concepts!)

I love the style it reminds me of some of those Pirates of the Caribbean animated Marquette that they came out with. Love it! Can’t wait to see some more.

I love this! Love it, love it, love it. Saving it into my references folder!

Think its about time I posted a new pic…

Update: Head and Shoulders/Upper Torso

So here Ive basically added detail to the ears (although Im wondering if they’re a bit too human-looking, I might make them more 'wolf-like later). There’s a load of tris and n-gons all over the place in the wireframe that I haven’t cleaned up yet.

I’ve also started working down into the body and funnily enough, I think Im having a harder time with the topology of the body than I did with the head! I want this Panthro to be pretty muscular-looking and of a heavy build so I want to achieve a good flow of topolgy around the muscle groups etc.

I’ve also been toying with a couple of ideas regarding his ‘style’ in my head. I really like some of the interpretations in my reference images, especially the one where he has the ‘thundercats black tatoo’ down his left arm. I might do something like that, or I was thinking about giving him more of a military, soldier-like appearance.

Thanks,
Pete.

I really like your version of panthro… gives more of his animalistic side but not losing the human elements.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the responses so far.

mnartgirl: Thanks for the encouragement!

Shuggs: Wow, thats a first  Im glad you found some inspiration from the early images.

vshen: Yeah, I think its a very fine line when designing a human-animal hybrid between something that still looks quite natural and something that looks weird. Hopefully I’ll be able to maintain the balance

Anyway, I’ve had a pretty productive evening tonight, I wanted to try my hand a producing a good eyeball texture. Here’s the result…

Thanks,

Pete.

And one more update before bed…

Still working up the shoulder/upper torso area here. Ive just photoshopped the colour of his skin around the mouth area to more closely match Panthro’s (obviously, I’ll do this eventually in the face textures).

Thanks,
Pete.

Hey

With his new eyes the red sclera (the white part I didn’t know the name for it love google!! hee hee) and the red in the background are so close that it looks a bit see through. I might open up the pupil a bit as well.

Keep up the great work.

Hey by the by I checked out your web site I love the little airplane safety guy. Great moment with the chin getting stuck in the safety vest!

Hi,

Yeah I think I’ll try widening the pupil a bit. I didnt realise that my background texture was so close to the eyeball but you’re right, looks a little odd now

I didnt actually design the texture with as big a contrast between the sclera and the iris, it should have been more of a gradual change in colour. I think it must be down to the shape of the iris (which flattens off), and I added the texture into the additional colour of the mia_material as well, which I guess has affected the brighter parts a lot more.

Hey thanks for taking a look. Yeah, that part was a bit ‘tricky’ to say the least

Damn your blood sir, updates

Update!!

Only a smallish update this time Im afraid. Been away all weekend, and its been a bit of a struggle getting the body proportions right. I wanted him to carry quite a lot of weight and muscle initially but I think he might meet his match if he came up against your Mumra-on-steroids Airflow  Im hoping to add more muscle mass if I ever get him into a sculpting app.

Ive widened those pupils as well which seems to make him slightly more accessible as a character.

I’ll try and update a bit quicker next time

Pete.
