Hi everyone,
this is such a fantastic theme!
I want to model the famous Thunderhawk from my favorite childhood cartoon MASK.
I still own some of the toys which now come in handy as 1st class reference.
Of course the proportions are a little off, thus I googled some pictures from reallife Camaros from '84.
My goal is to stay true to the original Thunderhawk concept from the toyline and the series, yet with more realistic proportions.
I really hope to find the time to finish this.

“Spectrum… ACTION!”
HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: M.A.S.K. Thunderhawk
nice start. I don’t remember this one off hand but will have to google it one of these days.
I have to say, M.A.S.K. was the big hit for my neighbourhood when I was growing up. I think it was the proliferation and the complexity of the toys that makes it so memorable, more than the cartoon itself.
Are you going to model any of the foldout parts? It’d be great to see the vehical equiped, and even rigged, just like the Toy
@mnartgirl: a lot of people I meet never heard of it. For me it was probably more like axiomatic experienced it, all the kids back in the days were into MASK.
@thehive: the show was great, 80’s at it’s best. They released it on dvd a couple years ago.
@axiomatic: Unfolding, of course! The whole transformation thing is what I look forward to the most. Should be fun to do one of the more tricked out vehicles in the future.
Here’s some progress:
I use a modeling technique I got introduced to by Orik. The aim is a Midpoly density mesh still suitable for today’s game-engines.
There is still a lot of edge turning and egeflow tweaking to be done, but it’s getting there.

I currently have Thunderhawk and Switchblade on my shelf - awesome toys and amongst my favourites. M.A.S.K. hasn’t aged too well but it was awesome back in the day. :buttrock:
Thats a good looking mesh, are you thinking of bringing it into a games engine like Need For Speed or something?
Would have been interesting to update the show using a Concept Camaro or some other contemporary car… in that paint scheme…
@TOBER: One fine day I’m sure I’ll bring it ingame. Should be fun to have the car in some Flightsim
I’m still a big fan of my childhood cartoons. I used to have a switchblade back then as well, but I gave my whole collection away to charity. Now I’m buying the stuff I used to have and the toys I always wanted back on ebay (mainly starcom and MASK)… it’s stupid and expensive (damn those mint condition boxed toys!) maybe, one day, my children will appreciate.
M.A.S.K. hasn’t aged too well
Obviously I have to disagree, I really like the edgy old 80’s style. For example I was very disappointed when in the Transformers movie bumblebee switched to the modern concept car. The only new interpretation I like is the new Mustang.
some progress:

finished basic bodywork now I’m going into details and interior. Wheels are still missing as well.
I’m still struggeling with some edgeflow issues. I had to model a frame around door window for the gullwingdoor to be at least a bit belevable. This takes away some of the ‘cool’-factor of the original car but then I want to stay true to the show’s Thunderhawk not the actual Camaro.
BTW
Here are my reference shots from the reallife camaros: (google search)

and from the toy and TV show: (DVD snapshots)
