HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: Danger Mouse

#21

Great modeling! This is looking excellent!

Since you are using both Modo and LW, how do they compare in the modeling dpt? I know LW to be a great modeling tool, but have never tried Modo, so I am curious to hear if Modo is really that much more preferable to use.

Cheers!

Latest update :-

@Rasmus, Thanks for the crits, totally fine with me, I’m always open to crits if constructive and yours definitely are. I really struggle with hands so I will go back to those at some point in the near future, I really want to get the base characters fleshed out before I tweak like mad. If I get all these characters meshed out this week then I can refine in the coming weeks, that’s my plan anyway…

@Felix, Thanks, I used to model in LW and when I bought modo 201 I really struggled with it. A bit of perseverence and I am in tune with it. It’s very very similar but shortcuts are slightly different, but the upside is you can pick verts/edges/poly’s really easily and just play around whereas in LW it’s not so easy. I suggest you try the demo and try out a few tutorials.

Oh and the only reason for going to LW is for the posing at a later point, unfortunately posing in modo isn’t a great strength as I see it.

edit Felix, I think modo is a great organic modeler, I know some people aren’t keen on it for technical modeling, i.e. architecture, apparently LW excels with LWCAD v3.

PS. It’s funny but I see problems much easier when I post here! Like the arch of the back isn’t pronounced enough yet!!!

cheers

lol Same here, I always end up seeing problem areas in the images after I post them.

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer on Modo/LW, Scott! I’ll give Modo a trial run when I can find the time.

Cheers!

Last update for a few hours :-

My poly flow has really screwed up on this one! The backside being the worst affected area and 1 area at the front! Will sort that eventually…

#25

you started a 6.30 in the morning ?? have you no life ?

good progress though.

Greenback’s face looks a little round compared to your ref image, it seems a bit longer in the picture, but as i know every picture looks a bit different anyway.
also seems a bit flat across the back of his neck, from the ref its seems to curve more from his head down his back …

keep at it, your doing better than me so far (and i cant get the hands right either …)

#26

Lol no not quite, I sometimes suffer with my sleeping patterns and life doesn’t start until after 9am does it!?

Latest version, no render this time just preview :-

#27

I had enough of modelling the characters for the time being so thought I’d replicate the setting :-

I’m unsure about the scale of the characters at the moment, need to go watch some DM

#28

Nice to see you in her buddy. Will keep an eye out on your progress.

#29

Wow, you work fast!

Both your models are looking good. Maybe DM’s body could be a little narrower, and also there could be a sharper edge where the nose meets the snout. And don’t forget his badge!

Baron Greenback is looking very good. There are a couple things I’d change:

  1. Greenback’s tie - He wears an ascot with a round tie pin in the center, and he has a pointed shirt collar (I think that may be what you mistook for a bowtie).

  2. Greenback’s legs should be somewhat longer and be bent at the knees.

I think you’ve got the face down pat! Very good likeness.

I hope you don’t mind the comments - I’m amazed at how much you’ve gotten done!

You’re cranking through this!! i will definitely be subscribing to this thread!!

#31

@Rob, good to see you about, are you gonna get yourself into this challenge? Hope all is well with you?

@Cindy, thanks for the comments/crits and it’s cool, I’m happy to receive crits as I often miss details when I’m in the package, as soon as I upload a screen/render I then start to see things wrong  For the moment I think I’m going to attempt starting GB’s hands, do the coat and then I’ll be moving on to Penfold, etc… I will go back to these characters and tweak like mad eventually.

@George, cheers fella…

#32

I’m back to it, I couldn’t help resist posting as I attempt creating the jacket now, meet the Greenback Hulk :-

I just might do a variation on the Hulk at some point, I think he would then be ablt to kick DM’s @ss

#33

Never going to happen!

Everyone knows DM and Penfold are undefeatable

#34

OK so I lost the plot a little!

Here’s Greenback finished apart from tweaks, I’m not feeling the 3D love today so no more for today :-

I couldn’t resist doing a quick pose tho’, I doubt it will remain as it’s a morph which could confuse matters down the line, I’m aware there is pinching and the likes but these will be resolved when I get them rigged properly.

bye for now

#35

Nice render! You are just blazing right along!

#36

Nice pose for DM!

Slow down a little, will ya!? lol How long have you been working on this total so far?

Cheers!

#37

Danger mouse is the coolest 80s toon. I used to watch it like a religion as a child.

#38

@Kelly, Felix - To answer the speed question, I guess my time put into this challenge is coming in at about 16 hours so far. I struggled yesterday just adding GB’s jacket, that took me about 2-3 hours on top! Wasn’t in the flow yesterday…

@Kelly, the render is lit by a studio HDR map and one directional light, nothing special going on, I like the simplicity of modo for setting up simple scenes.

I’m going to be starting Penfold today, but again I’m not really feeling it, I am going to put in about 2 hours and see where it ends up. I generally get a feel for how I’m going to perform about an hour into it.

cheers guys

#39

Wow Scott this is looking really good so far. Your Characters are so simple yet they have so much…uhmm…well…character

I noticed you play a little with DOF for your WIP lol. I love how modo can make use of such heavy features in such a simple and efficient way!

As for lighting, your simple set up is effective, however have you tried ies lights for lighting? I’ve just started using them and I’m hooked. I practically don’t use anything else now lol.

If you’re interested in checking it out, just google ies lights and you can find a ton. Within 10 minutes I had around 500.

Keep it up

@Joel, Thanks, but I’m replicating great characteristic characters  I’m always one for keeping meshes as low as I can, I guess it comes from the days of the Amiga, there was no way you could create dense meshes back then. Being particularly lazy I hate pushing tonnes of verts too.

Thanks for the tips on IES, I haven’t played with them much to be honest, I try to also keep my render times down, when it’s rendering just the character they weigh in about 7s a render. The scene was about 15s I think, not only am I lazy but I’m impatient too

I will prob go for proper beauty renders when I finish the characters off…

Anyways, here’s the start of Penfold, I started from a quadball, subdivided once and then used the Wacom along with the sculpt/move tool. I thought I’d try a different approach as I was struggling deciding where to start, fleshing out this way took about 20 mins. I normally start from the eyes and build outwards but I was having trouble realising how to do it with Penfold…
