HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: COBRA vehicles diorama

#1

We’re a two-man team working on a GI JOE diorama featuring classic Cobra vehicles.
Here’s our ref’s. Luckily, GI Joe stuff came with excellent blueprints, and we have the toys for reference as well:

Here are some wip shots of my HISS tank and his Rattler jet:

Three days work into it now, I’ve started textures:

Here’s Doug’s Rattler, he’s about 2 days in, starts textures tomorrow after a few last geometry tweaks and changes:

Crits are more than welcome, of course…

very nice job on those, kinda makes mine look a little crappy now lol, really like the suspension detail in the tread area, I tried to somewhat customize mine since I couldn’t really make out all those details from the refs I was using, (woulda been alot better with the actual toy in hand) but all in all the models look great, keep it up!

#4

Thanks, yeah having the toy in hand has made a big difference. Luckily, theyve been reissued and can be had at most target/walmarts for around $15. The one from my childhood has long since broken.

Rattler is coming along ok. If someone (points at OP) didnt assign too much homework  I would be texturing already.
I didnt like the way some of the panels were looking in the last shot so I removed them and will build them in with textures.

Anyway, here is what i think will be the finished model, I do reserve the right to tweak it more! Plan to start texturing this week.

Oh, and having the toy is sweet. Helps with modeling and I can chase the dog around when i take a break.

Thanks,
Doug

Aha, student/teacher project, that’s pretty cool. I was going to say that the cockpit looked a little odd but I see it matches the blueprint so nvm. If you post some wireframes it would be easier to critique your model. Right now everything looks fine although all of the detail parts seem to stick out too far. It is an airplane so they would create too much drag I would think.

Obviously this is based on the A10 but I didn’t know how old the A10 was. A bit of research and the first prototypes were developed in 1972. I only remember the rattler being the coolest plane ever back in the 80s. Didn’t really hear about the A10 until Desert Storm.

Hey Wyatt, I agree with the panels. I took the ones off the body, they looked out of place.

The cockpit is so goofy, but its like that for the action figure to fit in. I took a little bit of liberty by at least putting some edges instead of this giant glass bubble.

one of the early wire frames. You can also see my first cockpit cover which is actually closer to the toy and looks really bad.

I will try and get a wireframe from the current version tomorrow. I went back to fix some oddball things i did while modeling that doesnt show up in this early wire.

Im always open for critiques and suggestions.

#8

figured it was already after 4am and would only take a sec for an updated wire.

#9

took a run at the dirt and wear on the lower panels tonight. I’ll extend this look up onto other parts of the underside of the tank.

#10

Starting textures finally.
Had to remap and redo the fuselage.

#11

really awesome modles. those were graet toys, and an awesome show.

#12

Almost done with textures, just have the tracks to do and add some blast marks and bullet holes.

Works begins today on the scenery for the diorama: Desert attack!
