Hand Rigs?

#1

Hey all!

Does anyone know of a good way to set up an IK system on hands? I have a character who is a superhero and uses telekinesis, and I’m going to be needed the fingers to do a lot of that Spirit-finger-type movement. Any suggestions or tutuorials I could check out?

Using IK on hands (you mean fingers above all, I guess) isn’t a good idea. You should go for some Forward Kinematics rig, using follower or expressions. For fingers I usually use a Ctrl Null for each one. Heading and Pitch control the Heading and Pitch of the first finger bone, while Null Bank controls the Pitch of the second and third. Hope it helps.

If you want to see expressions in use on hands, download the demo of Maestro (http://www.stillwaterpictures.com/maestro) and take a look at the scene with the rigged male biped.

What Lino said - rigging up the fingers with a FK (deformation rig) driven by whatever IK system you need per shot, should be fairly easy to get each 3 jointed finger to follow a 2 bone IK layered into the rig.

Might be worth looking at the Cycler motion plugin for repeated movement(s).
