Halo 3 recon

#1

Here is a matte painting I did for the Halo 3 Recon trailer. This was actually pretty daunting and stressful due to the short time we had to work on the project. I had 4 days to paint over some gray shaded models and this is what I came up with.

Hope you enjoy

Matte Painting

Original 3D render

not bad considering the limited time

Looks good to me.

I see a lot of mattes that start from a gray render, or an AO pass. why not texture the models, and then paint details, atmosphere etc. on top of the textured render?:hmm:

it seems to me that you could have spent 1 day texturing the buildings, and that could get you a long way towards a finished piece.

just curious, it may be a workflow that makes more sense than i think it does.

anyway, this is great work for a few days:buttrock:

There are a couple of reasons to do it this way. I am not the greatest and fastest 3D artist so for me to texture all this stuff knowing I will move things around and take stuff out is just a waste of time. If I texture everything first, it may give me a base to start on, but more than likely I will completely paint over it, so the amount of time to lay out the UV’s and what not is a waste. Everyone has there own ways of working, some better for others. But in the end I am more efficient as a 2D matte painter and my VFX supervisor handed me that gray shaded frame and said make it look as cool as you can. Hope that explains a little.

I remember seeing this trailer. It was actually really cool to watch, I like the style you used for this, it fits the halo theme. I can’t say much else, Im not old/wise enough to know how long texturing, or painting it would take but I agree with you about different people doing things in different ways depending on how they work.

Thanks Brandon,

I come from the other side of the tracks… I’ve been doing 3D for over 12 years.

I got into 3D so that i could model and render stuff that I’m not talented enough to draw:D

Great matte brandon! and with the time frame its very well done.

I think for a Matte painter to work like this is fine , even knowing 3d. Unwrapping these models would take a week in its self. And god knows how long for texturing as well. Plus you would still not know what elements you would keep.
I know a bit of 3d but its still easier to transform all my textures right in photoshop and go from there without 3d. But if I was doing a projection it might be a different story.

Keep the good stuff coming Brandon!

Hey this is pretty good work man  nice

This is a great matte. I remember watching the trailer thinking who painted these. Awesome work.

I just watched the trailer for this recently, and for how tight the deadline was it came together pretty good. The painting I did went threw several changes and the one they had me do in the end wasn’t as good as the one I posted here in my opinion. It got noodled a little too much, and once it went through final comps it got flat, but none the less the work was pretty cool!
