Guitar tutorial

#1

Hello.
I’m starting to make a 3d models of my new guitar, a Yamaha APX5A.
Since I don’t know which way is the best to modelling it, specially as regards the body and the soundhole (I make photos of the guitar and put them in the viewports, so making the shape should be simple, but how making the hole? Boolean operations?), I’m searching for a tutorial. All your help is welcomed.

Thanks

Please try looking in the tutorial thread before posting

Also check out www.3dtotal.com If memory serves me correct they have a couple decent ones over there also.

Good luck

Thanks Deathcricket, but I looked to that tutorial times ago. It didn’t focus on modelling a guitar, only it makes a bumpy surface for an electric one. I’m trying to build an acoustic guitar that, since it has a soundhole, is harder to do.
Anyway, while working in these days, I think I’m near the solution, making an appropriate use of boolean and shell modifier.
I will post some screnshots soon, hope you see and comment/critic them.

Bye

Well, I did it.

Anyway, I need more help. Can someone suggest me how to round the corners of the body? I try chamfering the edges, but the results are a lot of mistakes and strange surfaces.

Looking pretty good. Also wanted to apologize about giving you those 3 bum tuts earlier. They definately weren’t as helpful upon 2nd glance. Most people don’t even check the tut link so I figured you had not.

For your edges, I would grab them and click the extrude button. Set the height to zero and then change the area so you get a 2nd line on the top and bottom all the way around. play with the values so it looks right. Then put a mesh smooth modifier and it will round the corners without distorting your object bad like it probably does now.

Also, I would not recomend using booleans. they seen to mess up your mesh. Granted I have not used them since version 5 but suspect they still aren’t that good. Instead try Celticdog’s technique on this page. It will give you a much cleaner hole in the center area.

This same thread is where I found the extrude edges trick I just mentioned. I think it’s around page 49 or so if you aren’t clear on that technique. Very good good read and worth your time.

Great thanks, Deathcricket:)

I did it!
Maybe it’s not best at all, but it works. Some problems in the inside surfaces, but I will cover them with the wood supports I can see looking from the hole in my guitar.

Looks like you need to put the sides on one smoothing group. I have built acoustic guitars in the physical world so I can relate to wanting to model one.

Hey Death, howz the dragon?

Yes, thanks, I have not set the smoothing groups yet.

Now I am in troubles with the bottom part of the neck from the start to its arrival on the body. The shape is hard for me to make. Need some help, please:cry:

Thanks

I was able to do the neck by lofting two of his section. Now I can go further and complete my guitar.
I will post the complete work when it’s finished.
Thanks to everyone who helped me.

@ Aragorn26282 Hey man your corners looking pretty good now. That spot on the bottom where the neck meets the top plate needs a little work but I’m sure you got that covered. Keep us updated on your progress.

@ M.Shea Hey man! Your friend is an impressive teacher. Little weak on poly modeling but everything else is rock solid. I’m really enjoying his class. My dragon is going slower than expected. I suck at unwrapping and photoshop too, hehe. Updates to come very soon I hope

Thanks Deathcricket. I’m going on…

#13

Some progress…little time to spend on it this week…

#14

go on, go on. show us what you’ve made so far

#15

I have some problems with the fretboard. It seems that I made the neck a little bit too long, so now the frets cannot be placed like the real guitar. I think it’s about 1-2 cm, I’m going to fix…

#16

This is a quick (really quick: I just drag and drop some max standard materials without thinking about it) render of my guitar, just to show where I have arrived.

I think it’s a good point now:)

Tell me, please. Thank you

#17

I’m going to post the new images in the wip section.

Thanks to all who follow me here, thanks for all your help
