Grouping

I was reading a tutorial in Imagine FX. It said that if I paint a silhouette of a character, create a new layer on top of that and group the two layers, anything I painted on the new layer would stay within the silhouette. But I am having trouble getting this to work. By grouping, does it mean create a group folder from the layers window and drop the two layers into it? I just can’t get this to work. Can anyone help?

hold the opt/alt key down and put your mouse between the layers (in the layers palette) you want to group. You’ll see it change to a couple of over lapping circles, click and it will group the top layer to the one below it.
