Grouping meshes/objects so that they move together

#1

I am working on an art project that consists of numerous parts. Before I start sawing up a bunch of wood only to get my dimensions wrong, I am modeling it in blender. Because I’m trying to reconcile various spatial constraints, I need to be able to move the parts around. I’d like to be able to lock groups of parts together and move them as one single object. I’ve tried adding my various meshes (cylinders, cubes) to a group but this does not result in them moving together. Can anyone tell me how this is done in blender (or direct me to a link describing it) ?

Note that I have managed to combine meshes with a boolean modifier but this will not work in the current case because I still need to move these objects relative to each other to make other adjustments.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You can do this with parenting. Shift select all the objects, the last one you select should be the one you want to parent to. Then press Ctrl-P Make Parent. Now when you move the parent object the others will follow.

You can also do this method with an empty as the parent, then when you move the empty the other objects will move too.
