Hello everyone,

i am Carsten Whimster, and i program computer graphics, and learn to model and animate on the side when i have time (i am not very far yet). i work for mental images, and program parts of mental ray. i am currently responsible for the rasterizer (was: rapid motion), a lot of varied memory code, the hair rendering, the flushable (large) bsp, and other bits and pieces. my most recent project was overhauling the rasterizer, which has made it much faster and more stable. this new version can be found in maya 7.0 and xsi 5.0, both just announced at siggraph.

as far as modeling and animation, i have modo 102 and maya 6.0 unlimited. i am trying to learn modo first, which i really enjoy.

i am here in an unofficial capacity, of course, but if anyone has issues with the revised rasterizer, contact me privately, and i will have a look. as for the other areas of which i am in charge, until i have time to overhaul them, please use your support channel, not me

cheers,

carsten

Hi Carsten,

Sound like a very interesting job you have.

I´m also interested in learing poly-modelling. I will give Zbrush a try.
Let´s see what happens. Wish you a lot of fun and success in modelling.

Alles gute und schöne Grüße nach Berlin.

i am by no means an expert, but as far as i understand, it is more common to do the fundamental modeling in another program (xsi, maya, 3ds max, modo, silo, etc.) and then to do the detailing in z-brush. z-brush is meant to have a more limited modeling toolset, whereas the other packages are not as good as z-bush in detailing. i guess with time z-brush will strengthen the basic toolset and the other packages, such as modo, will add more detailing tools. did you already buy z-brush?

Not yet but I intended to buy Zbrush in the next weeks. You are right about the initial modelling process. It´s quite common to take the first modelling steps in the well known 3d packages and import them into Zbrush for detailing. The Zsphere Modelling looks a bit weird but I saw some impressive modells of Sebastian Rohlion and the process seems to work. I like the idea doing 3d with a wacom.

I thought about Maya first but it´s a bit to expensive just for the idea to start modelling. And Softimage looks soooo different that I´ve the impression I will not get through it´s structure.

modo and maya > that´s a powerful CG Kit. You can be pleased.
