I live in a studio but its really empty and I have a big white wall with nothing around it… I do not need professional quality but would like to set something up
What would I need to buy as far as making the green screen and how would the lighting work ?
There are quite a few options. Also it depends how good you want it to be. But, perhaps one of the easiest options would be just to get some Rosco Chromapaint and slap that to one or few of the walls. Trouble is that it is not that flexible solution, but it works to some extent.
Other option is to get a chroma fabric that can be moved about. This has multiple good points, one of which is that you can use it elsewhere as well. Just need to make sure it is as flat as possible not to cast shadows to itself.
I am not sure what else to say, the screen itself is not a brainer. I’ve used chroma painted papers, plywood and such. Even if the paint work is not that ‘pro’, I’ve got away with it quite nicely. On the other hand, I’ve also shot some on TV studio to betacam, and it was not noticeably better than my own setups (besides the camera of course). Might have been good luck, who knows.
Lights are somewhat more trickier, and much broader subject. I do not think there is any strict rules about it and I’m not light technician by any means, but the idea is to have it as even as possible over the chroma paint. And to have it light what ever is in the front as little as possible unless it fits the general mood.
Try to have distance between the screens and the actors/objects to minimize the lights that bounce from the screen and so that it does not look odd on the subjects. Given that lights come in different temperatures and such, it really depends on the needs of a particular set-up.
To sum it up, either get chromapaint or a chroma fabric. Other paints might work too, but I won’t tell you to try those. It might be a good idea to go to a shop where you live and ask a small piece of fabric to test with, then borrow a set of dedo-lights and a DV cam. It’s a few evenings and you can try cheaply how it works and what you need. More you put money into it, more easier/faster it becomes.
