Grand Staircase WIP

#1

I am currently working on this scene for a project for class and would like to get some feedback on it so far. It is a scene of a grand staircase and I am creating it using Maya and Renderman. One of the major things I would like feedback on are the materials and lighting as this is my first time using Renderman and I’m still figuring everything out with how to properly layer materials, along with the staging

I would say that there is something wrong with the columns at the foreground. They stand in the middle of a sunspot and still manage to hold almost black shadows. I can’t pinpoint what exactly is wrong but it’s bad linear>sRGB mapping or overdone postprocessing (overcontrast) or it’s a messed up shader. And it looks like there is almost no indirect illumination on them (contrary to the background wall which looks a lot better to me). I don’t feel like there is an accurate fresnel reflection. It feels kinda constant under all angles. Also I see a lot of black silhouettes around objects and oversaturated gold. Hope this helps.

Why not light up the candles and the chandelier, it would bring more live into the scene.
