Grand Space Opera Voting open!

#81

Hi everyone,

just stoped by and wanted to say that I voted the 3D Part today. 2D will follow this weekend. Because it seems as if there is no way of getting a direct feedback about the scoring of once image I started to tell the people I voted for by their threads.

CGNetworks Admins: Is there no way for the contestant of getting the actual score of the images? I mean it does not have to be public but for us GSO people it could help to compare each other.

GSO contestants what do you think?

theuni -> It’s an interesting idea, but personally I subscribe to the philosophy stating that ignorance is bliss  Oh, at least in this particular case of course… Lessee what some others think…

That aside: it’s a very impressive line-up of entries to say the least. My respect to all those who managed to cross the finishing line with a final entry

#83

Yep, I agree, you shouldn’t know the voting - how would you like to know you came 16th by a handful of votes?

heh, if it’s not to be this time then try and make it next time.
The entries are mostly to a good standard, so voting could be close.

only one thing is sad… :frowning:
People who tell to some well-known guys "MAN I VOTED FOR U ! " … that is only sad thing…

why is it sad ? because they want to get extra points for that…
i.e when u vote for someone and then he feels … like he must vote for u to…

I think people should stand up and voice there vote,Not hide.Ignorance is for fools, cowards and ostriches that duck there heads into a hole.

This way obvious better entries will not get cheated by competitors.Certain people not voting for direct competition for example.Basically everyone knows what the top 10 or 15 should be.And when people are forced to show there picks to the World they will not likely shun the ones that really deserve the votes.Oh it wont stop the problems completley but it will help.
People will be to scared to not pick obvious ones, they will be embarrassed. This way the best will really get to the judges.Plus with that 25% of the vote coming from people this too will help the truley deserving.
I say open up a thread for individual right in your face voting. No praticular order needed, just name out 15 people.
yah I know the lesser ones will spit at this. Now they have a better shot at getting in and spoiling the true better entries.
You dont have to know where you stand in order,Just see how people are voting. No order, just here is my top 15.

No man in the end this is called Grand Space Opera…not grand computer graphics… Maybe try that one again.

NO!.. u are totaly not right! … there are so manny great works… in this challange… i dont want to say how manny i think… but there is more than 30 of them that can fight for first 15! …

#88

Yes and they will.Your 15 and his 15 and my 15.In the end they will all fight it out.And the best will rise to the top. This way the true best have a fighting chance.otherwise the best can be avoided due to competition and other factors.
People will not always vote for obvious ones because they are in there way, lets face it thats a fact. Not with everyone of course, but with many. With a in your face vote people will tend to be more honest lets say.
In fact fine.Vote for 20 or 30.But let the World see your votes,I tend to think less avoidin of the obvious best will be the case with this system in place.

it’s an art challenge, I’m sure most people would agree that asthetics are probably the most important element in their choice of who to vote for, and rightly so - not how many spaceships, lasers and lens flares they have in the picture - it seems that’s how most people define ‘space opera’.

how 'bout you ‘try that one again’ instead, k?

#90

Technical art and sci-fi art are not the same although sci-fi art is more technical than most. There is a difference. Your opinion is your own, but if I were you I would consider thinking before speaking… You sound…silly.

#91

wow…that was impressively condescending.

good luck in the industry pal

#92

Mibus,
Any chance on “expanding” the page borders on those who have widescreeen images…I didn’t realy realize untill I started checking aroung but next to an entry in portrait or even landscape ratio…the widcreen looks increadibly small in the current set up… …

…perhaps CG Talk could just pay for everyone Widescreen moniters…umm, pleasE ))…

This is how I felt during the Machine Flesh challenge (since it was evident among the winners and shortlisted), and I have a feeling this will also happen this time around. I respect the idea of community voting, I think it is important. But there is a huge bias also as you mentioned with popularity, and the way I see it the judges should review all final entries rather then just the 30 shortlisted that are picked during public voting, and the final should be picked based on the breakdown they currently have set up.

BUT HEY!!! In the end whether I win or loss, I am most happy knowing that I learned new techniques and greatly improved my skills, and to me that is more valuable then a prize

With that said… Congratulations to all participants!!! The entries look great and I will vote without bias as I always do

Soo true. Thats why I want to create the tribute DVD as a tribute to all the efforts.

I just feel bad that those whom might have sacrificed in what they were doing to meet the challenge vs those whom just did something great. Great is something appealing to the eye regardless of theme. I just wish it was the other way around. Judges first community second. That way the judges would be able to read the theme description eliminate the off topic artwork and then let the community decide which we like the best of that. It woulda have been more fair that way. Oh well. Can’t win them all.

#95

Are you trying to start fights? Or is that just a by product of your attitude?

#96

Guys, let’s not get into a huge war over this. Everyone has their own opinion on this matter: I have my opinion, KWAK has his opinion, ||) |V| |^| has his opinion, etc… let’s just move on.

I really don’t care if people know who I voted for; I do not expect, nor want, them to think they “owe” my a vote in return. I vote for those who’s entry both is artistically excellent and represent my interpetation of what the theme of the Challenge was.

Whether I win or not is completely a moot point (although it’d still be damn nice…): I entered this Challenge to challenge myself, to grow as a CG artist and to develop my skills further than what they were.

So, just to get this off my chest, I’m going to list (gasp!!! ) the entries I choose to vote for in the 2D and 3D entries:
EDIT: Seems some people just don’t like it when you express your opinions; oh well…

#97

agreed. No point in continuing to argue.

Good luck to all.

#98

Ok It`s done. I threw out nearly fifty votes! There are sooooo many GREAT works!

#99

I am sorry. I am just laughing so hard still over this. I was just imagining telling an art director or hell a director even that I know he/she requested that I produce a GSO image but I felt like creating a fantasy background to go with his sci-fi movie… the expression on their face in your mind should say it all. It is your choice to vote for whom ever you wish, same with everyone. Just try to picture the canidate you are voting for saying this to the director before you do! Thats all I ask, when you see the dumbfounded look on their face in your mind… maybe, just maybe, what marko and others have stated will make sense to you. Because as beautiful as that fantasy/machineflesh/other-non-GSO entry is, its not what the director asked for.

#100

hey,

now I started something here  Guys I think you totally misunderstood me with this scoring thing…

First of all I wanted to make a tribute to the artists and respect on this way their hard work for the last 3 month.

Second… the scoring wasnt meant as a pillory it is more a help for us all. Try to be honest with yourselves... there are only a few entries which will fight for the GP and thats ok so.
See, if everyone would have the same skils how will you distinguish the best at the end. But for those who will not win anything it will be a valuable information where they stand in the long row of contestants.

As a autodidact it was always essential for me to know how good my skills are. Otherwise I wouldnt be able to tell how much I want to earn as a freelancer or employee. For this reason its always good to know how skilled you are in comparison to others.

I even changed my signatur to keep this voting thing fair… otherwise its only a matter of how strong you will spam CGTalk in the next view days with posts where your signatur aims on your entry.
