Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Jason Maguire

#61

Hi there Jason!
Just wanted to say that Youve done here quite job, really great one
The render is really nice, kinda sad rainy atmosphere. Just love the floor textures :applause: And the whole lighting is really great!
Imho just the monks look not that real because of the lighting, dunno just gives that kinda look.

#62

WOW … my only coment is that you did such a good job with the boats and one does not come close enough for you to see some detail…

#63

Hi Eagle_e7,

really great work you do there! I like the mood of your image but maybe you could some extra lights or something at the top edges of your images. It looks a bit empty up there. Besides your idea really rocks

#64

Here’s a new update. Not much change here, mostly minor fixes.

Can’t think of much to add at this point so I’m considering submitting this as the final image, what do you guys think?

#65

terraarc: Thanks!

Kaksht: Thanks very much! I agree about the monks, not sure if I’ll be able to fix it but I’ll give it a shot!

vrhead: Thank you! I agree about the boats, I wish I could get them closer but I think it might be too distracting.

theuni: Thanks man! I agree it seems a little empty up there, I’ll experiment.

#66

Y E Z!!!NOW IS PERFECT!!! YA ROKS MAN! very intense!

#67

You have a very cool ambiance in your scene! For my part, it seems quite finished at this stage.

#68

Well Jason…It does look ready…A real nice job…Now a warning…What I am about to say may cause more work… …I think you can expand your work.Increse the size of the scene.Expand the horizons a touch…You have the room…Possibly zoom in on the characters…They are done well, and I think can be shown easily in a closer shot, with the BG expanded still as well…Ok…just my thoughts…It really depends on many points of view, right or wrong…But as it is I think you have done a very nice piece of work here, and something for you to be proud of Jason…All the best,I’ll check back later to see how things are going or what you will have decided on…See you then…:arteest:

-OZ-: Thanks man!

Kraull: Thanks very much!

Virtuoso: Thanks! great point. I’ve given it some thought and I think I’ll stick with what I have here, If I moved in I would probably have to redo and rethink a whole bunch of stuff.

Many thanks for your comments.

Here’s my post effects and compositing submission.

Both scenes are rendered seperately and composited together. I made a whole bunch of tweaks to them in photoshop (Curves, levels, some glow, added the moon e.t.c)

#71

Here’s my lighting submission, the main scene is lit by five point lights and the exterior by two point lights, one spot light and a very low amount of GI.

#72

Here is my final image submission, just want to say a huge thanks to everybody that has offered me critque and encouragement.

This contest has been a great amount of fun for me and a huge learning experiance aswell. I’ll definately be sticking around to see some of the great works (far better than mine) you guys are doing turn out.

#73

Oh my goodness you’re done already! It’s a truly nice piece. I like the mood very much.

Question…How on earth did you do the seawater with all that salt and foam? I’ve been trying to do something like this for a long time…

#74

Nice job Eagle_e7! :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Your last image looks complete and with a certain melancholic - gothic - ā€œinevitable bad is comingā€ mood!

Wishing the best on your effort, and have a really really happy relaxing holidays!

PS: I don’t think you’ve closed this page already…I think some refinements are in your mind , consiously or unconsiously, waiting for the right time to come to surface…you still have almost a month for some tweaking…I would do…my fingers are itchy!!!

#75

bravo! I think it’s great. But why not some more tests. You always have this image to submit as final. You can play with the horizon, I think the water should dissapear in the far, far distance.

You told me how you did the water, but I still am wondering how you got so real result:)

well, what to say more… congratulations! you have my vote:)

#76

I like the idea. Good luck

#77

god! ur already finishing and mine just started :scream:

thats some totaly beautifully misterious image u got there! all the best:thumbsup:!

#78

terraarc: Thanks! haha, you’re right, I’m bound to find things I need to tweak.

d-tox: Thanks very much!

yunisirees: Thanks man!

keetmun & arturro: Thanks very much guys! here’s how I made the seawater:

The sea itself is just a polygon plane with a few lumps on it that I modelled with sculpting tools. The texture on the ocean is made from some pictures that I took in my bathtub, heheh

Here they are: (Feel free to use these if they’re of any use)

http://jmaguire.co.uk/Temp/Water_Pictures.rar

I then used some dirtmaps and put them together to look like this:

And that’s pretty much it! I applied the texture to a blinn shader and used it as a spec map aswell.

#79

wow… excellent atmosphere!! is the rain 3d? if so is it difficult? I know your image is final, but the centre character is it above the floor?

great work!

Oh man that’s just wicked. You sure are damn smart!

Cheers!
