'Grainy' cel shader in Maya?

#1

Hi,

I’m ‘re’-learning Maya (I have a license for Maya 2011) with the ambition to make a 3D animated short film. I’m already thinking about artistic direction, and as a huge fan of Eran Hilleli’s beautiful animations, I would like to achieve a similar look in my work. I understand Mr Hilleli used Cinema 4D to produce the films I;ve linked here:

I’ve seen a great example of the type of texturing/shading I want to emulate here:

Cinema 4D Cel Shading (about 24 mins in).

I’ve posted a couple of screengrabs by way of illustration, although it’s the grainier/noisier look in the second grab (FIG 2) that I’m keen to reproduce. I’ve tried playing about with layered textures, using a noise shader, but it doesn’t come close, and I simply don’t have enough knowledge of Maya shader networks to know how best to do this. Using a noisy 'air brush in Photoshop, 'I can very easily produce what I’m after (FIG 1), but I’m hoping there’s a way in Maya of colouring my characters and landscape using procedural textures.

I’d appreciate hugely some advice to point me in the right direction. Thanks so much!
