Details are insane. Did you make the paintings on wall & windows yourself. Thats worthy of complete project by itself!

Truly inspiring work this mate!
There is real beauty in doing a project the right way, you without doubt are doing this architecture justice by getting in all the little details. Will really enjoy watching this thread evolve now.
there are some great talent here, that is for sure. Its great Artists like TheThidMan that reminds me again why I am still hanging around here at CGtalk WIP session.
Watching CG masters work in progress is so much fun that just seeing the end product at the finished galleries.
And I was thinking of ‘cheating’ (like make simple geometry & use DOF blurring) in making my very simple Victorian house for my current project. After looking at this, I feel so ashamed of myself with such thought. So now, I will instead make a detail model of the Victoria style house.
Wow thanks for the response guys! I really appreciate it. It provides huge encouragement to maintain the details on a project like this when you get such great feedback.
Keiyentai: Thanks mate!
PKD: I’m afraid not! I hired a telephoto lens and went to Ely Cathedral to take the texture photos. A little cleaning up in photoshop was needed and a lot of mapping, but otherwise they’re pretty much exactly the same as in Ely.
GMG: Thanks a lot! I love medieval gothic architecture and it’s the most fun to model. Huge amounts of symmetry in the architecture do lessen the workload a bit
Here’s another update on the current progress. We’re looking down the nave towards the crossing and on towards the choir/chapter house. There’s still a lot of holes in the building because I haven’t modelled the exterior yet. Click the image for the full 1920x1080 version!

Progressing very slowly on this! Really hard to find the time to work on this. Anyways. Update on the Nave entrance tower, modelled after parts of Reims cathedral:

solid and massive modeling. Was wondering how much time did it take to model those complicated shapes.
Keep going
Thanks!
What are your thoughts on the redevelopment of battersea power station? I used to work 5 minutes from it! I took a few pictures of it on my way to work: Flickr photo
The basic model takes a while, usually using a combination of straight poly or box modelling with some lofting and arrays. After than, it’s just a lot of symmetry modifiers stacked up.
Great detail on the whole model!
I really liked the rose window and the octagon shaped dome.
Looking forward for the final result!
Good job!!
Updates for the front. Really haven’t had the time I’d like to work on this but hey ho. (Click for full res)
Love the detail on this model hugh , its going to look great when its all done
. as for the redevelopment of battersea power station I can only hope this time it works out ,every other project have failed so far ,and the longer its left as it is the more its just rotting away, if it was up to me I would have kept the turnbine halls and turned it into a museum. but im sure that would not have made the cash the greedy pigs wanted so thats why the idea would have never worked.
anyway Hugh good luck with the project and keep at it
by the way I like your flickr pics.
Thanks Danny, much appreciated!
I think the Tate Modern is a pretty good medium between preservation and commercialisation of the power station. I wonder if they’ll at least keep the turbine hall space as they have with the tate?

And by the way, what will you be using to sculpt all the statues and other organic ornaments?
Woops, duplicated image, fixed that to show the actual render of the external details!
Haha thanks. Not sure for statues and other stuff. I don’t have much experience in sculpting so I’ve been trying to find a way to get a 3d scan of them. I’ve tried using autodesk’s 123d catch to get a 3d model of some catholic 12" statuettes I got on ebay but the details weren’t sharp enough. I’m struggling to find a way of doing them, so any ideas would be appreciated! I really do need to figure out a way to do them. Although the cathedral has hundreds of individual statues, i should only need to do a dozen or so and scatter them about to give the right impression.
Wow that’s just crazy in a good way
So much detail everywhere… Do you have some good reference like accurate blueprints for this? Otherwise it is easy with such things to run into problems once you connect a few bigger pieces and then you;re off by a meter or so. That was the case with my White House for a section I had no blueprints for and I had to match it by looking at plenty of pictures over and over again. And of course certain angles are just impossible to come by.
What’s the poly count so far? Are you instancing all those repeating segments?
Cheers
Andre
