Giant Elephant Pirates - Critique Please

Would really love some feedbacks / suggestions on how to further improve this piece. It did not meet the CGtalk gallery’s standards. =(

Thanks for your time. =)

Cool idea and well performed too.

The elephants are well made, but I don’t think the sky and the buildings are of the same quality. The sky is blotchy and feels quite flat. I would like to see more saturated colours and layered clouds to give a better sense of depth. http://www.flickr.com/photos/yoshi28nl/7187229346/

The buildings aren’t very interesting and they seem to have a different horizon than the one seen in the picture.

Thanks much! That’s a really cool reference, will see what I can do.

I’m a total newbie here, so please take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I like the image concept, but I think it would benefit from

                        - drama, if human characters are to be shown at all
                        - a sky that complements the drama and overall composition. As it is, the sky is a bold red that draws attention away from the primary elements and redirects this into the background, where the distant city is the secondary element. I would try and have all elements somehow complement the foreground action. Apologies if this sounds wishy-washy.

Thanks for your C&Cs, there are actually human silhouettes in there, but because of the size of the elephants they are specks in the image, they can be found at the lower right. =/

Hmm, I see what you mean about the sky and composition. Hmm, wouldn’t have noticed that if you didn’t point it out. Thanks!

I don’t really like the composition because the first place that my eye is led is to the city in the distance. My eye should be led to the elephant as this is the main subject. Blame the clouds for this! If you flipped the sky and the city to the other side (leaving the elephants where they are) it would probably help. You could also do the opposite of this as I’ve shown below.

The above example is far from perfect but may help you in seeing how the composition is leading the eye to completely the wrong place. Make sense?

I’m not actually very good at painting at all as I’ve been doing it for 2 months so don’t take my suggestions as orders!

Hey, thanks for the example, I can feel the composition better directed to the elephant and also like Pwwka said, the human characters are more prominent and it somehow feels like a moment of awe for them.
