Getting That Papercraft Look

#1

Hi everyone,

I’ve been posting over at the BlenderArtists forum. you can see my work in progress thread here.

Anyways, I’m getting close to wrapping this project up but really looking for help on how to get a more convincing Papercraft look.

Here’s my work so far:

My models are simply modeled from a GEO perspective. I then have a wireframe modifier that’s subtly displaced that gives a folded edge/bevel look to the edges. Texture wise I’m using a seamless cardboard texture plus specular map plus normal.

This is a ray traced render in Blender’s Internal render. Currently no indirect light in this render, though I do have the scene set up for adding that in for the final render. I’ve also mixed in some AO. Narrow depth of field created in the Blender Compositor to add to the scale model look.

All comments and criticisms welcome on all aspects of the piece. In particular as the title suggests, keen to get everyone’s “papercraft” tips.

I ended up finishing up the piece with some additional texture layers to give more of a crumpled look:

And here are a couple of animation stills from the final render:
