Getting displacement to work in one direction, not along normal...

#1

Hello,

I’m currently doing something that would benefit from me being able to do displacement in just one direction instead of out from the normals. This is of course with the use of a planar UV map to keep things simple.

I can upload an image if it would make what I’m talking about clearer.

Any clues as to what I have to tweak UV wise or anything else?

Thank You,
Gideon

Displacement along arbitrary vectors is possible in MRay (has been for ages), but I don’t know if it’s supported by the standard set of shaders.

I made an addon to expose this function a while ago.

I haven’t tried it on recent versions of XSI though.

First of all- I’m glad to know I’m not crazy for wanting such a feature- but it seems to be a needed one at times.

Secondly- that looks very good Ben! I’ve seen that before, but for some reason never put it together in my head that I could just feed it one direction until now! That should open up quite a few doors - fingers crossed that it works in 7.x and if it doesn’t, well I’ll just have to try it in an earlier version (seems to be happening more often lately anyway).

Thank you both!
