GEO position restore !?

If I have a piece of geo
duplicated it
changed it’s pivot
and moved it away
freeze transformed it
what’s a good way to move it back to it’s orgnial position
and back on top of the geo which it’s duplicated from?

Modify->Snap Align Objects->2 Points to 2 Points

I use the align object option and did a
align in World X Y Z to last selected object
it worked…
but why did it work?
is maya guessing the center pivot of both objects?
see how far away they are from eachother and off the distance?
